Fair play to the I.T.

As we all know, a girl was killed in Dublin over the weekend.

I note that the Indo has a photo of the grieving parents at the girls funeral on its front page. I haven;t seen the tabloids but I assume they haven't held back.

I've no problem with the media covering the story, or mentioning that the funeral has taken place.

However I don't see why a national broadsheet needs to put such a photo on the cover. Its not newsworthy. Its not particularly relevant ( do we we need to be told they are grieving, traumatised).

In addition, personally, I would think it would add to the trauma for the parents if they were to see a photo of themselves grieving on the front page of a national paper.

Therefore, fair play to the Irish Times for maintaining some decency. They have covered the story, but on page seven, and the photos are of the funeral (flower arrangements etc) rather than of the people. It seems an editorial policy on their part, and whatever other faults the paper has, I certainly respect it for that.

If the IT think that coverage of a 12 year old murder victims funeral is worthy of a paragraph on page 7 - fair enough - that's their call.

Oddly their P1 pic is a child at electric picnic - lash on the irony there.

For a "no story" or in your opinion a story that's "not newsworthy" it was a main story on the news at one radio and 6.01 new television yesterday.

But maybe the rest of the media are just our of sync and not in tune to the IT step (and yours).

yep, maybe I am out of sync.

The Radio news at one did well to show a photo on their bulletin.

    Oh cynicism! This early, really!

I said they 'covered the story'.

But, anyway, as this conversation looks like it will only drift in to the inane, I will draw a line underneath it.

What I am saying is: I don't think its fair or reasonable to put a photo of the parents on the front page. Either you think thats fair or reasonable, or you don't. I don't.

Why did you bother replying if you hadn't read the OP?

The Irish Times did cover the funeral yesterday with a picture on their website's home page of Michaela's school mates, in uniform, some of them visibly upset.

Tough call on publishing photographs of these events especially when kids are involved. I think it's the context that counts, and they got the message across by publishing the pix. I think the Irish Times did a good job. I cannot comment on the Indo (didn't go through it). Some of the stuff in the Irish Daily Mail about this tragic event I've already commented on.

Now that I have seen the photograph in the Indo. Again, tough call, but I think Lise hand wrote a good piece about parental grief. Who could fail to be moved by it. In that context, the photograph made sense.

And I have to say, it should be read and viewed by the likes of Fiona Looney and co in the Irish Daily Mail with their blame the irresponsible parents bollocks. What a c*nt.
