Finally got round to taxing my car today, having registered it back in January.

I've not used the car on the road since re-registering it here, so I had to fill out the declaration and get it stamped at a Garda station.

    Conversation went like this:

    G:"It's not an Irish reg"
    M: "Aye, it is."
G: "That's not an Irish reg"
    M: "Aye, it is."
G: "How's that an Irish reg"
    M: "ZV, it's over 30 years old"
G: "I don't think you need to tax a classic"
    M: "You do, it's 48 Euros."

Get to the motor tax office:

    Lass processes forms.

    L: "That's €172 Euro please"
M: "No, it should be €48, it's VINTAGE class"

    After checking with someone else,

L: "Sorry, it didn't automatically come up on the system"

I do wonder if anyone knows what they are doing any more...and wonder if the Vehicle Registration Certificate will come back with the correct details (AFAIK it should)

Would you?? had a garda convince me that my '81 was already entitled to classic tax...."sure that's entitled to classic tax now, it's over 25 years"
& this was only a few weeks ago.
In fairness though if one is not totally in the loop it does get confusing....just take NCT's on classics in the future for example, one ZV is NCT exempt (prior to 1980) one ZV is not NCT exempt (post '80) try arguing that on on the side of the road

Oh the joys of classic motoring...;);)

Lol,they are screwing with the wrong guy there!!!:p

It doesnt come up,purely as a moneymaking racket im sure. You have to actually tell them. I had the same trouble with the FII in January, she also looked puzzeled when i said it was 48eu.

    As for the Guards.....

the cops will just be relying on the anpr to distinguish between a pre and post 1980 car , so they will post on the way if you are not tested

No I don't think the gaurds should be expected to know every little detail & latest change out there, just use some common sense at times. They really can be their own worst enemy.

I don't think a non-traffic garda needs to know the details, but just stamp the thing as requested. It's not like he's verifying the details, just witnessing a declaration?
