    Hey all..

My natural hair colour is medium brown, a while ago I got some blonde highlights in it(not bleach blonde or anything just a bit lighter), Im back to college now and just wont have the funds to keep up getting blonde highlights...

Im thinking of putting a brown dye in it from the chemist myself.. anyone done this before, should it be ok???

Hi! I did it before. I've really dark hair now but two years ago I spent a fortune going blonde and ended up hating it after a few weeks.

I bought two boxes of brown hair dye and did it with a friend, as it's hard to see yourself if you're missing bits and getting full coverage is more difficult when you're covering blonde up. I did it once, washed it out, blow dried it, then dyed it again as we had missed a few bits.

My hair is very, very thick though so that's maybe why I'd to do it twice. It did no damage to the condition in my opinion. It felt better than when it was blonde. My hair was in good condition to start with though.

The blonde came through slightly after a while, so I just re-dyed it . Again, it was grand! So in my own experience, everything worked out to my advantage, my hair didn't visibly suffer, and it felt better to me afterwards. I pay a lot for cuts/blow dries but apart from when I went blonde, I always dye my hair myself and have never had any negative results!

the blonde can come through a bit greeny when dyed brown so id recommend using a brown with red tones in it to try prevent that. but other than that, as long as u expect to have different tones where the highlights are, i dont think there'd be a problem...

I wouldn't chance it personally (had a huge colour f*ck up in the past). Blonde plus anything with a bit of red in it = orange. Not a good look. It depends on your natural hair colour too, if you're naturally warmer the brown could go warmer. I got my hair dyed back brown years ago and it took a few goes in the hairdressers.

Hey, I did this about three weeks ago. I am blonde and decided that I would put a darker colour into it. So looking to save some money I took myself down to boots and got a lovely coppery brown colour.
Needless to say it didn't come out coppery brown more purpley black. Have to say though really liked the colour. It was fine for about two weeks and then the colour started to fade and you could see the difference between my lighter blonde highlights and the rest of my hair. Was not a good look so decided to bite the bullet and went to the hairdressers to get it done.

The difference in the shine and colour intensity is amazing compared to the home job. In my case it is lesson learned and I will stick to the hairdresser in future! :D Hope this helps!

Just make sure to do a skin test 24 hours before and you should be fine!

Doesn't sound like your blonde is very bright, and if you only got one round of highlights, it shouldn't be too extensive. Get a nice chocolate brown in the chemist and cover it thoroughly and you should be fine, though you may need to re do it in a few weeks as the lighter hair comes through again.

Short answer is yes, you can totally do this. I had been dying my hair very bright blonde for 3 years and I bought a bottle of Clairol permanent hair dye (think it had a plum tinge) and it covered the highlights completely - I agree with other posters you might have to go over it again 2/3 weeks later in case blonde starts coming through again. The hairdresser will give out to you but it works...often better than some of my friends who went to a professional to go dark again. Your hair will be really soft and in great condition. It's good to take a break from blonde. You can go back again at any stage:D
