Apparently its happened to the west of the Last blast in the Gulf of Mexico and thrown 13 people into the Sea. Rescue Helicopters and Aircraft are on route to the scene!

An explosion has torn through an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site of the blast in April that caused a huge oil spill.

The blast, which threw 13 people into the water, was reported by a commercial helicopter company about 0930 local time (1330 GMT), Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said.

It is unclear if the structure is a production platform or a drilling rig.

Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are en route to the site.

The blast occurred around 130km (80 miles) south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

All 13 workers who fell into the Gulf are accounted for, the Coastguard said.

Mr Ranel said smoke was reported but it is unclear whether the rig is still burning.

    02/09/2010 - 16:54:34
An offshore oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill, coast guards said today.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said the blast was reported by a helicopter company about 9:30 am local time.

Seven helicopters, two planes and four boats were en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

Ranel said it was not known whether the structure was a production platform or a drilling rig or whether workers were aboard.

He said smoke was reported but it was unclear whether the rig was still burning.

What with Oil rigs blowing up, Tankers subsiding, Miners being trapped, its like someone is messing with Earths resources.

    Any word on the ownership?

If its BP - the directors might as well all resign if it turns out to be an accident that could have been prevented.

    Cheers

    http://www.mariner-energy.com/

Off shore drilling might be put on hold again then around there.
Thank heavens we have no off shore rigs ...or do we!

Well - IF - there is a leak, it might be of a different kind or fixable fault.
We will have to wait and see.

    Edited: Crap pun.

    Sky News Update
A blast has ripped through an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site where BP's Deepwater Horizon platform exploded in April.
All 13 people working on board the oil rig were thrown into the sea.
The coastguard said they have all been accounted for but a rescue operation is thought to be underway.
The incident was spotted by a commercial helicopter. The alarm was sent out and seven helicopters, two aeroplanes and four boats were sent to the rescue.
The blast occurred around 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.
Unconfirmed reports said the rig is the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy and is not believed to be an active well.
There are currently no sightings of oil in the water.
The explosion will strike fear in the global community after about 206 million gallons of oil were spilled after into the Gulf after the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers.
    More follows...

Isn't it ironic that after the USA invaded a country purely for it's oil, that the USA then gets invaded by oil?

From what I've read, it's not a drilling rig. It's just a staging platform with some light production involved. Environmental damage should be extremely small.
