iPhones are only sold with a 2 year contract in America, so unless you're willing to skip across the border to Canada where I THINK they sell them unlocked in Apple Stores you're SOL.

SIM free iPhone 4 in Canada is $659 for 16Gb and $779 for a 32Gb - waiting time is 3 weeks, just like here.

Me thinks that if you are hoping to get a cheap SIM free iPhone on your travels then you will be very much disappointed

I think Apple.ie is actually one of, if not THE cheapest place to get the iPhone sim free (with exchange rates etc). Even if you get it cheaper abroad the warranty is only valid in the country of purchase, so its save possible hassle getting it here if anything goes wrong with it.

SIM free iPhones are very scarce in the USA. I had a 3GS that was sent back under warranty, rather than fix it they sent me a new one. This happened around the same time I got my new iPhone 4, so I put the 3GS up on eBay.

When setting it up I decided to tick "add to USA and Canada eBay" for EUR 0.15

Within 1 hour of starting on eBay my 3GS was bid up to EUR 275 and eventually sold (to the USA) for EUR 465. Since then I have had the buyer in touch to see if I can get him some new iPhone 4's and ship them over, he was offering EUR 800 for each 16Gb so long as they were SIM free and in an unopened box
