hi just wondering what ye make of this:
got a renewal letter today from my insurer, my premium has gone up by E200 even though i had not claimed or had any penalty points, i contacted them and they said last years quote was a clerical error and therefore i got an unusally cheap quote of them and that why it had increased this year, is it legal for quotes to go up if ya have not claimed or had any penalty points??

Sure it is, they can quote whatever they want. Shop around, see who's cheapest for cover you're happy with.

    Simple... go elsewhere.

They can charge whatever they like... of course you don't have to buy it from them!

Aviva put my insurance up €150.. never claimed in 25 years, no points, no fines.. nothing.

    I am now with 123.

I often wonder how many insurance companies bank on a % of customers not shopping around, just accepting the renewal quote and excuss for the increase.

BTW certain insurance companies must be desperate for business at the moment, my insurance was up for renewal in the last couple of days so I usually contact my current insurance company the last after shopping elsewhere to see what is the cheapest and if they can match it. This year they contacted me about a week later saying they could knock €40 off the renewal because and I quote "I didn't claim off them".

Last year I got a rediculous quote from the AA, this time round I received no less than 4 letters and 2 phone calls in the last 2 weeks from them telling me that they will beat my current renewal premium. They didn't.
