Pretty straight forward question lads, if you offer private classes, how much is the going rate? Trying to gauge for my own prices which i've touted as 40 quid for an hour. Just seeing what you guys offer.

    Ta!

 i take it you aren't overwhelmed with business then...........40 euro an hour, you aint that good kid and i know that for a fact. you have some neck

Obviously I don't do private classes, or teach MA at all. But, as a consumer, I'd say 40 euro is a high rate.

The average industrial wage in Ireland is about 16 or 17 euro per hour.

If you want to compare yourself to a teacher, they're probably on about 27euro per hour.

I'll get a lot less than 40 euro per hour working this weekend as a pretty senior paediatric A+E doctor.

But at the end of the day, it's simple economics....you're worth what you can get.

If people will pay 40 euro per hour, then go for it.

I'll let the people who actually have experience of these things give you some proper advice though :p

EDIT: actually with recalculation of exchange rate I'll prob get about 40 euro an hour on sunday, but you get the point. On a weekday/evening I'd get about 30 euro per hour.

40 an hour is pretty reasonable for private lessons. Its below the going rate in my discipline anyway. Not sure of the average in TKD though.

Too cheap if you ask me. Jon is very experienced at Taekwondo and highly sought after. But never mind that, anonymous internet man says he's not so never mind.

Jon I have a ridiculously high rate for privates because I don't have time to do them :) so when I get one it has to be worth my while to take time off coaching, family, work etc. So I price it based on that not just on what the market says. I do privates fairly regularly with all my guys who train here but don't charge them. As long as someone is interested and wants to learn I'll take time out for them to train with them.

The market sets the price, if you advertise at €40 and get too many applicants then your price is too low and vice versa. It would vary from sport to sport obviously. €40ph sounds very reasonable to me considering i would pay €100ish for a one hour private with a BJJ black belt.

@Tallaght01, maybe but calling out a doctor for ones kids at the weekend costs a lot more than that, and I guess you're working for more than the single hour at a time. I'm also guessing you're not having to pay back any of your income for facilities, insurance and the like. Comparing what you make versus what you charge is comparing apples and oranges once you take other attendent costs into consideration. Only sayin'...

I don't want to take this away from yomchi's question, but I pay a LOT of money for insurance, plus thousands every year for membership of royal college etc, and I get the same hourly rate when I do occasional 3 hour saturday or sunday morning shifts.

Obviously if I were paying a coach to come to my house I'd expect to pay more. Similarly, if he was hiring out a room for the occasion.

I'm just saying as someone who does martial arts, I wouldn't pay 40 snots per hour for private lessons. But someone above said they'd pay 100 euro per hour for a class with a BJJ BB, so there must be a market out there.

40 an hour I think is fair enough. To put it in perspective how much would you pay for a driving lesson or grinds some of which are less than an hour.

    Hey Jon,

    How's she cuttin' bud?

I think 40 is pretty fair. It's always a tough one... I generally charge around 40 euro and hour too. However, sometimes it depends on the persons circumstances, and if they are one of my long term students.

But I know a lot of "supposed" high ranking Kenpoists (and other Martial Artists) who charge ridiculous amounts of cash - anywhere between 70-100 euro PH. Then again, the public can be a bit naive, and "quiver at the knees" if you mention that you have a high ranking "black belt", so then they expect to pay the big bucks.

Ironically, I know a few high-ranking black belts that awarded themselves high ranking dan grades.... But what can you do? :(

    Cheers,

    R.

I ha paid 50 euro an hour to train with a bjj black belt before and given his level and standard of instruction I would consider this cheap.

40 quid is cheap too. Swimming teachers easliy make more than that for the same time and less.

You get what you pay for I think. Or at least you should.

we do them for 25 an hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭TKD SC

    Hi Jon,

I would have thought €40 seems pretty reasonable based on what's out there. I know my tkd instructor charged someone €50 a while ago (although he v rarely does them anyway). The guys in SBG charge between €50 - €100 I think and they would know their prices I'm sure, therefore you must be in the ballpark. My brother paid about €80 for a one hour Tai Chi private recently.

I don't know who does privates though, as it's like €50 for a whole month of training in most clubs, but guess some people just want to get them...and if they do then €40 for your level of experience seems good...

I suppose it depends on the service yur offering, your qualifications and the location and facilities on offer.

We offer at Dragons Lair €30 p/h thats with blackbelt instructors who also hold a N.C.E.F. in fitness and personal training in our fully equipped premises, we also do a discount for bulk bookings , i.e. somebody comitting to long term plan to reach there goals , i.e. a wedding, or other such goals.

How very Irish... There's a lot that stuff going on unfortunately.

In all honesty, I don't think I've ever charged the full 40 euro price to anyone that I've trained privately. Especially, if they are coming back week after week, as times are tough at the moment.

But quoting 40 ph initially tells me how willing/dedicated the student is. If they are really into it, and wanted to continue the training - I'd definitely work something for them.

we charge 30 yoyo for thai boxing....but thats only because we are better than the dublin lads :) - only joking paddy and darren.

60 euro an hour or 30 a half hour is what i charge for 1 on 1 training of any type, thats cheap in fairness when you consider you could get 20 lads paying 10 euro a class and make 200 for maybe 90mins training, and the hour is dedicated to them so they get better attention, but as always-people have the choice wheter or not they want to pay that and if there is a demand for that then the price is justified.

No knock on Yomchi but 40 to me is too cheap and at that rate it would make me think i was paying for an inferior product, 60 euro an hour would be for a basic personal trainer and in some cases thats just to count your reps!!

Thanks for the feedback lads, I don't normally do privates but I've had quite a few queries lately and started three this week so I wanted to gauge what was best, I think 40 is a good starting point anyway.

LMAO @ fedor.2 who has a black belt in keyboard comman-Do

It's understandable that some instructors who have a specialist field would have a higher fee also.

Prices vary for the part of the country your in and it depends on the clients your aiming at getting (mostly business people or TV/Radio personalities).

Is there anywhere near Kilkenny that I could get Private training in Boxing?

Personally with senior students I often teach them for free in various parts of the art. However if someone wanted to start off and have me teach them individually well I would figure out what I make an hour in a class, and charge that, afterall basically they are paying to exclude other people, not buying my time. I would also advise against it as working with a small class of competing fighters is far more beneficial - broader pool for testing, competition focused workrate, competitiveness & drive to not be seen as incapable of doing what the next guy is doing. Otherwise from experience they can give up or feel that they cannot reach your level seeing what you do to be of master level in their mind, even though you are blue in the face convincing them it is just what is required! Ie shame of losing face to peers at the same level is a good stick to beat any laziness out of a student!
