although your contract free, your phone is still locked to Vodafone and IIRC the APN settings are locked in place by the carrier settings?

i may be totally wrong here, so hopefully one of the more experienced Apple heads will rubbish me or back me up :D

    agh right - :D

settings-general-network-mobile data network - then enter the correct APN settings from the vodafone site or from the sticky on this forum.

Exactley where i presumed they would be , but when i go settings -general-network theres no mobile data network only:

    Enable 3G on/off
    Cellular data on/off
    data roaming on/off
    Tethering
    VPN
    Wi-fi

looks like you have the Vodafone carrier settings installed, i dont know a way around this as i have a factory unlocked iPhone 4 on Meteor so i can edit my settings as i wish.

maybe one of the Vodafone heads can help?
