    Hi Axl.
Two tips; turn up on time and not be a douchebag.

    Well man,

if you're being heckled and you don't think you've done anything to deserve it, just try your best to ignore whoever is doing it.

If you start getting involved you're only encouraging the sad-act to keep on heckling you. If somebody is getting drunk and rowdy or violent then it would be the responsibility of the establishment to get rid of them becuase having someone loud and obnoxious shouting at the band would surely send people scurrying out of the bar.

If there is a bouncer or anything there, maybe quietly bring it to his attention that somebody is getting out of line in the bar and let them deal with it!

On the other hand, if you're quick witted enough you might be able to turn the hecklers words back on him though, but be careful because if you get into a war of words you want to make sure you can

    a) Win the war
    b) Finish it quickly

Because the last thing the bar manager is going to want to see is the band that he is paying to play arguing with somebody in the crowd on his €€'s!

I assume by this, you mean that this was the reason the OP was being heckled.

    OP : I agree with FunkDrummer's advice.

If the majority are into it, just press ahead and ignore it or alert staff. Nobody likes a tattletale though, so only blab as a last resort.

    Whatever you do, don't whine.

Once I was playing in West Virginia and this drunken redneck REREATEDLY climbed onto the stage and put his coat on my back. Ala James Brown.

Another time I played a gig with a band that had a drunken club manager get up during their set and DEMAND that they play covers he could sing, as it was his birthday.

They were not a cover band, at all.

He was so drunk that they just played their own songs and he sang covers over them. Brutal.

Wow - an "I rode your Ma" comeback - totally original & bound to shut up any heckler. I can just hear the groans from the entire crowd if anyone used that as a comeback for anything.

Did'nt realise I touched a raw nerve there.
Ok then, if you're being heckled while playing,I've been at countless gigs where the band is getting abuse.Thing about it is that most bands just ignore it. If you're good enough you can play on regardless and not let it bother you.Obviously if it's getting to the point that it's too much, introduce the heckler as the 4th/5th/6th member of the band or single them out in some way and get the rest of the crowd in on it.If everyone else in the room is laughing at them, they'll tend to calm it down.Hecklers in the crowd don't just annoy the bands, there's been many a time I've been sat near someone mouthing off at a gig,and every time they'd open their mouth everyone around would just cringe, so I think that if the band was to make a tit of them that way,the rest of the crowd would join in and the heckler is kinda left p1ssing against the breeze there.
    That better Forest?

Unless things are becoming out of hand ( violent, or throwing objects for example ), I think any band worth it's salt should be willing and able to continue playing and ignore the heckler. I agree that a band should not have to put up with this, but it comes with the territory, and bands (should) know this.

IMO, responding with stock one liners, only brings the band down to the heckler's level, and does not really solve the problem.

Hmm a tricky situation to resolve.

My advice is, never acknowledge a heckler in anyway. All they are looking for is attention for themselves, and if you give it to them they will only want more.
If its only one heckler, then ignore them. If you have a few mates with you, chances are one of them will tell them to shut up or will shush them.....careful it doesnt turn into a brawl though!

My advice to avoid hecklers is to pick your venues / audiences well. For example, if you are an indie band, dont play a metal night gig in Fibbers on a Friday night to a crowd of drunken metal-only snobs/fans. Pick your battlefields wisely and it should lessen the risk of hecklers.
Of course there are no guarantees, but play the odds.....

That said, if the band is truly terrible and/or a vast majority number of the audience dont want the band there for whatever reason, then you are probably better off leaving with your self-esteem intact. You would be surprised how far word of mouth can travel, an some indie-only fan bad mouthing a metal band can do more damage to the bands rep than you think.....

Thats the way tho. If your good at it and its only one person heckling, humiliate them over the mic and they will stop pretty quick. If its a large number of the crowd then the only way is to ignore it......or write better songs ;) (joking hehe)

It can be funny if you use it in a ridiculous and ironic way. I've used it to successfully shut up skangers before. Ignoring doesn't always work when you get a real smartass.

I just want to point out that my "rode your Ma" post was done just after the pub on Saturday. I usually make a point of not posting drunk but there it is.
I would'nt use the approach of that comment, but I would still go down the road of answering back.
Like I said before,it's not just the bands that get their heads wrecked by that kind of nonsense. I've been both in crowds and up on the stage when (usually) the singer just tears them to pieces and it tends get the crowd on the band's side and gives them a cheap giggle too.
Hah,funny story. I was at a gig about ten years ago,and some drunk lad was roaring abuse at the singer/songwriter fella. So in between songs, he dedicated Every rose has it's thorn to him, walked over to the table and proceeded to serenade him with the entire song. He was so mortified he kept tight lipped and we all p1ssed ourselves laughing.
That just proves my point, why should anyone performing have to put up with some gobby hooer. I know that the person/s on stage are there to entertain, but there's nothing wrong with manners. And I feel that if someone crosses that line, you should handle it like one of you mates saying they rode your Ma last night, or something to that effect.
Then there is the issue of when things get out of hand or violent. I still feel the same rules apply, but in this case only if there's no other option.I would'nt wait for the staff in the place to a)determine that there may/may not be a problem and b)act/don't act upon it.

tanx for all the feedback folks, i really loved the one liners, the reason i asked was i was at a gig 2 weeks ago and the band ware really trying thier best, they warnt the best band in the world, but i would give em ten outa ten for effort, and just as they ware about to win over the crowd some git with a big mouth just started mouthing off an didnt stop, i really felt sorry for the band, they ware all only about 18 or 19, i take my hat off to any band no matter wot style, cos it really isnt easy gettin up there, an the last thing they need is some tit with a big mouth ruining the night, the odd bit is o.k. i suppose, but when it gets nasty it just ruins the night for everyone.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 795 ✭✭✭Fandango

I would only use the one liners or answering back if you generally make people laugh and are good at it. It could go either way, as in if you do it badly you can turn the rest against you but do it well, get the rest of the audiance laughing also and they will be on your side and the heckler will more than likely shut hi mouth. Its a risky way all the same tho.
