    Not to cold mind.
Otherwise we can write off another four weeks of hunting due to the stupid "cold weather ban":rolleyes:Feck sake the Continent gets colder Winters almost as a norm.Norway,Sweden,Finland the "winter" we had is shorts and T shirt weather to those lads..:eek:and no one has ever heard of a cold weather ban.Half the EU wouldnt be able hunt if this was an accepted policy.

The reason there was a cold weather ban is because of the exceptional cold weather Ireland was facing. There was an extreme shortage of food due to the snow and ice. In the wintertime Birds migrate from northern countries to get away from their harsh winters. They come to countries like Ireland because we are supposed to have a milder climate which didnt transpire last winter. This meant that all bird species were struggling to survive. To carry on hunting these birds would have just added to the stress the birds were under. It was a welfare issue aswell and the hunting organisations seen what was happening and rightly took the decision to have a ban without government intervention. Before anybody calls me a fluffy bunny loveing tree hugger I shoot aswell but I have respect for the wildlife around me.

If you saw them shooting you should have got your local NPWS Ranger involved. It was a legal stoppage not just a voluntary one.

    Lads,

Can you please let me know what form you have to fill in and who you have to send it to to apply for a Foreshore License, as I'm hoping to do a bit of duck shooting this season.

Also I understand that you have to list the areas where you intend to shoot but that you can put down as many areas as you want. Do you have to list each specific area or can you just put the counties e.g. Cork, Kerry, Limerick ... ?

    Thanks

Thanks v. much Tack - very helpful. I'm filling out the form now and will get it off asap. The only thing I'm unsure about is the bit to be filled in under '' Please specify
location(s) where you propose to hunt'' - can I just list the counties I'm interested in or do I have to be much more specific than that ?

I'd put down eg kerry killarney lakes. (or all lakes you intend to shoot)

AFAIK they just use it to asses the amount of hunters in an area and use it when they monitor bird numbers as an indication of population strength

call Ballybay if unsure, the lovely ladies up there are very helpful when filling out forms

I just spoke to one of the guys at Ballybay who said all I have to do is to list the counties ( rather than specific areas within those counties) that I wish to shoot in . He also said that rather than posting the application I could also fax it to them which I have just done, so heres hoping that they don't take too long to procees it !

Well, I received my first foreshore license this morning in the post :D

Odd thing, I applied for four Western counties and got three  and neither of the lakes I listed are mentioned

The county I can miss, the lakes I may get a shot on at some stage, are they left off out of routine or was I unlucky?

Why do you only need the foreshore licence for certain lakes ...? Is it that you dont need one for others or that you're not allowed to hunt them.....?

The lakes mentioned are State owned. Perhaps other lakes are privately owned.
