Found this on a site, see below, becoming a problem I"m told

The emergence of the Internet over recent years has seen it impact many areas of our lives. Most people now use the internet for all sorts of things in their business, social and personal lives. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that many people can become addicted to using the internet and online activities.
Online and Internet Addiction - Some Signs.
Feeling pre-occupied with the internet, thinking about last internet session or planning next one.
Feeling the need to use the internet for increased periods of time in order to feel satisfied.
Have repeatedly made unsuccessful attempts to stop or to cut back amount of time spent on the internet.
Feeling restless, moody, depressed or irritable when attempting to cut down or when unable to use the internet.
Frequently staying online for longer than originally planned.
Jeopardising relationships, job or educational opportunities because of internt use.
Lying to family members, friends or others about full extent of internt useage.
Using the internet as a way of escaping from or coping with difficult life situations or feelings.
    Other Symptoms Include:

    Failed attempts to control behavior

    • Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities

    • Neglecting friends and family

    • Neglecting sleep to stay online

    • Being dishonest with others

    • Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior

    • Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome

    • Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities

    "Recent years"?

Pah, I've been using the internet since the late '80s.

Hmm, they might have something with this addiction theory...

    d'internetz = 90% + PRON

They've put the cart before the horse here, internet addiction is a symptom of another condition, it's called "having absolutely nothing going on in your life-itus". Can be cured by leaving your house occasionally.

If cats is another meaning for Pron, then yes. You are correct.

    Late-80's? A newbie huh?

    :)

But I agree, the whole concept of being addicted to the internet is so 1980's.

The internet is now as much a part of everyday life as my car and I've never heard anyone complaining about car-addiction. The internet isnt a hobby, it isnt a fad and it isnt a luxury.

I laugh when people proclaim "the Internet is ruining our lives" declaring that post 1990's society is going to hell. Wake up call, the "Net" has been around since the late 60's. I bet you the people at DARPA who conceived such a creation and actually implemented it thought about blogging crap and spamming others "walls" with ASCII pOrn back in the day. This isn't attributed to a post 1980's society, regardless of "Facebook" and other totally non innovative tech out there. Hardcore computer users have always existed.

I mean, the guys who invented the Unix Operating System thought it would be awesome to squeeze more cycles from their PDP-7 machines to improve their space computer game. So, Unix was invented not to benefit corporate interest but for K&R to play their game in peace! It's not the fault of "the Net" or our "digital society", it's simply human nature to be addicted to something as a result of personality traits. It's not the "Nets" fault you are an addict. Understanding the sheer power of a tool, and respecting it for that precise, potentially fatal power is something alot of people overlook. Thats why you see cases like that American kid who nearly killed himself by messing with electricity.

"Blame everyone but I, they say. How could I be responsible for my own problems?"

Porn: turning other "pleasurable activities" into mere "activities".
