As his handicap is in category 1, he loses point 1 for each shot he is below standard scratch. In this case he could lose around .8, therefore his new handicap should be around 4.7 (5). So he will go from a 6 handicap to a 5 handicap. Hope this makes sense.

    it does thank you ..

so does it vary from cat to cat what a player will lose for coming in under par ... i.e cat 1 is .1 per shot , cat 2 is .2 and cat 3 is .3 and cat 4 is .4

yes, that's correct, your category dictates how much you lose for each shot you are below CSS.

Yes, you are correct, I haven't played in a few years, I was actually just checking this to be sure and I see that category 1 starts off a 5 handicap and he was off 6. My apologies Gorhugh for any confusion caused. Although will he then lose in effect 1.6? or will it be 1 .2 lost & then .7? The lack of playing has clouded my memory slightly!

    Almost right.
He's off 5.5 so his playing handicap is 6. So he's in Category 2.
He gets cut 1 x 0.2 which brings him down to 5.3.
    And then 7 x 0.1 because as soon as he's below 5.5 he's in Category 1.
So his new exact handicap would be 4.6. Playing handicap 5.
    Hope this helps.
