Delay in obtaining genuine parts....

The master cylinder on the clutch of my 2005 Passat gave up the ghost last Friday night so I left it in for repair on Monday morning expecting it to be returned by that evening.

No such luck. My mechanic told me that there was a 5-7 day delay in obtaining the part from Germany as the VW distributors don't hold it in stock....

It appears that the genuine part is about €100 plus VAT. I obtained a spurious part today for €70 (including VAT).

Is this an exception or is it generally the case? Are main distributors not holding stock of parts such as a master cylinder? (Probably costs them a tenner from the manufacturers....)

    E.
