PGDE Questions

Hi everyone, hope someone can help me out. The Teaching Council website says the following about my degree:

Bachelor of Science in Government & Public Policy (58): Business, Economics and CSPE.

    (58) Recognised for the purpose of teaching CSPE provided that graduates would subsequently acquire the Higher Diploma in Education with a CSPE elective or a Higher Diploma in CSPE.

The special requirements for recognition to teach economics says applicants must have economics as a major subject in the degree extending over at least three years and of the order of 30% at a minimum of that period. The same goes for business. I did economics for 3 out of 4 years of my degree but it would not have constituted 30% of my degree. I can tell you there is no Government and Public Policy graduate out there where economics makes up 30% of their degree as we are just not offered enough modules in the subject. I'm a bit confused as to whether or not I can teach economics and business. One Teaching Council document makes it look like I can and another makes it look like I can't. If I go down the teaching route will I only be qualified to teach CSPE?

Also, if I'm going to apply for secondary teaching this year I would apply to UCC, UCD, NUIG and Maynooth. I was wondering if I would need 4 copies each of my undergraduate and masters transcripts or just one as the application process is centralised within PAC?

Hope that made sense. Thanks for any replies.

    Hi OP,

Not too sure about your ability to teach Economics but you do not need to send in 4 separate transcripts, one copy will do the job.

    Hey Johnmearsheimer,

Just a quick reply to your post, what you should do is ring the teaching council and discuss it with them. I would recommend you send all your transcripts to them and i think its over €200 to get them assessed and they will quickly tell you if you can teach them or not. I could teach English without my h-dip but had to do the h-dip and do cathectics as one of my methodolgies to be registered to teacher Religion. I have history as part of my degree but it doesnt met the 30% but I am going to send in my transcripts to c if I can even teach it to Junior Certificate.

    Hope its some help
