Laptop for medicine...?

    For my brother:

I want to study medicine, commencing September 2011. (Failing entry I intend doing a Science degree.)

My 18th birthday is coming up quite soon and I'm getting a laptop as a present. I have a friend starting in Law and Business this year in TCD who has heard that medical students in TCD require a Apple MacBook. I was just wondering is there any truth to this?? Also do ye have any recommendations on the type of laptop that would be needed??

Also, any information that you could send to me about the medical faculty would be extremely useful. :)

    Many thanks.

P.S I'm not getting ahead of myself, I just don't want to buy a laptop that won't be any of use to me next year as they are very expensive.

Need to decide this soon myself. I doubt every med student has a mac tbh? Seems a bit specific, as well as the cost of them...

Nah, they don't require a Mac. Laptops are definitely handy to have for any subject while studying in the library though. A netbook should do ya.

As said above a laptop is useful for studying in the library etc.

Medicine students do use apple macs, however these are provided for use in the physiology labs in the college (where you would need to be using them anyway).

Stay away from Acers! In my experience they're absolute rubbish!

Don't mind him. There's Macs in the Arts Block, 24 hour study space, 24 computer rooms in the Hamilton. You'll be sorted!!

    Macs are awesome though.
    JUST SAYIN

And remember, the cheaper the laptop you buy, (generally) the shorter it will last you. So just because it's cheap now, doesn't mean you'll be thanking yourself when it breaks beginning of senior freshman year ;)

There are newer ones though as well. Although i agree with you, the ancient ones are a pain alright.

Your own computer is handy to have, a lot of the lecture notes are online and can be downloaded (and printed off) in advance. It can be a pain to have to wait for a computer to come free in one of the computer rooms (I know Facebook and Farmville are critical), and it is very useful to have access to one at home for PBL research.

It really does not matter if it is Windows based or Mac based.

The Physiology lab ones are used for lab work and MCQ revision, you cannot access the information from them even if you had a Macbook. So basically it is down to whatever is your preference.
