Hi I am looking for a decent place to get my brakes replaced in the Ballymount area. Can anyone tell me how much this may cost in a 04 Corolla Hatchback and maybe recommend a place to go? First car and I dont want to be taken for a ride service/ pricewise.

    Thanks in advance.

Depends what's needed, normally in a car from new the front pads need replacing first, then next service maybe the back and then next service might need the pads and discs replaced too. Depends on mileage and driving style, one driver might get 20k from a set of pads, another might get 50k from the same car.

You can't replace just the discs it has to be discs and pads together as otherwise the new discs will be destroyed from the old pads. Hard to know what stage yours is at, if it needs front and back pads and discs you could be looking at around €300-€350, if it just needs front pads you could be looking at around €80 to €100, maybe around €120-€150 if it needs front and back pads. If you have let the current pads go down to the metal they will destroy the discs and these will then have to be also replaced.

Any independent mechanic will be able to do this job easily enough, no need to bring it to a main dealer.

on a related note, the check brake pads light came on in my 06 passat today. how many kms would i have before they need replacing? should i get them done immediately or is there a bit of leeway?

Hard to say, I would'nt do more than 500km with the warning on, the cost of pads is much cheaper than discs.

Hi all just to update I got the car done in Ballymount last week for €160, front and back pads. Work was completed in less the three hours, without pre booking. great value and service!

If your brake light is on it's easy to check how much material is left. Take the wheel off and with a small torch examine the pads in contact with the disc.
you will easily spot the friction material and how much is left, run your finger over the edge of the disc if there is a lip, where the pads have worn the disc away, you should maybe think about new discs also. (don't comtaminate the disc with anything, no greasy fingers from the chips)

Fronts tend to wear quicker than rears as they do all the work

Some alloy wheels allow you to see all this without even removing the wheel.
