Full Scholarship in Korea

I've been talking to a few old friends from home about postgraduate study recently and it seems a lot of them applied for it but haven't got in because of lack of places or lack of funding. I'm currently studying for my MSc in Korea on a scholarship and they wanted to get some info about it so I thought I'd throw it up here in case anyone else would be interested.

There are anywhere from 50 to 100 places available in each Uni each year. Obviously this depends on what you are going to study. Engineering and Sciences are the main ones this applies to AFAIK but I've also heard of others like language study/social sciences.

Getting a place; I found the best way was to directly contact a professor in a lab I was interested in.

    Basically the conditions that I have and I've seen in other Universities here are as follows;

    - Exemption from all fees and tuition. I have to pay about 30 euro each semester for facility usage or something I don't quite understand but apart from that I haven't paid a cent.

    - Grant/Money. I'm getting enough to live on (just) for a grant. They do pay you if you do work on projects/research etc but I haven't had the chance to do that yet. I do work part-time as well to subsidise myself. The money Universities give you can be anywhere from 200 to 800 euro a month. To put that into perspective the average industrial wage here is about 1200 - 1500 euro. Private work (English conversation tutor) is easily gotten.

    Conditions:
    Maintain a good/high grade average.

Really if this would interest you then I highly recommend it. You always have an advantage getting a place because your native language is English whereas most foreign students here are Japanese, Chinese, Russian etc.

As an example heres a scholarship for a Uni for some kind of structural Engineering lab.

    http://infoscholarship.net/2010-scholarships-for-graduate-students-smart-structures-lab-chonbuk-national-university-south-korea.html

    Basic Requirements:
    Aerospace / Aeronautics / Mechanical / E&E / Mechatronics engineering background.
    Good English language proficiency.

    Financial Supports:
    Starting pay KRW600,000 for master; KRW900,000 for PhD; KRW1,500,000 ~ 2,000,000 for post-doc.
    Annual increment KRW50,000 ~ 100,000.
    Incentive bonus for publication.
    Grade scholarship available.

1 Euro = 1500 won. So for the masters you get financial support of 400 euro per month. Not bad over here.
