BMW $tealer Cash Discounts?

Went to buy a BMW 1-series to act our 'sensible' car, no trade in cash sale on an '05 M-Sport from one of Dublins Main BMW Dealers.

We were asked if we had a trade in, said no, and were then offered the grand total of €495 off the price of the car and some drivel about breaking even - I told them what I'd been offered elsewhere (not even getting into other factors) but this didn't make an iota of difference, so we voted with our feet.

I hate to think what I'd have been told if I had a trade in...

Discount means nothing by itself, all that matters is how much money they wanted for the car.

    what were ya hoping for????

we'v dropped all our prices the last few months, the way we are selling is if the marked price is say 9950 thats the price of the car if you have a trade in, if no trade in i will sell it to you for 8950, no offers no more bargaining ill give a grand off asking price thats it. Most people are happy enough with this

Well a damn site more than €495 off what was one of the top three priced 1-series at the time. You may well have dropped all your prices, but most haven't, or don't seem to have. For example, I was offered €1.5k off an '06 €11k 1-series and would probably have pushed for more, but thought that was a realistic amount.

It that was a dealer that offered you €1500 off a €11000 1 series, you did extremely I would have thought. I wouldn't expect any more than 10% from a dealer.

They dropped the price of that particular one to €9950 from €11k and it sold very quickly after that (well within the week, I was on holiday and when I came back it had gone).

I think 10% is about right, as opposed to 4%.

But as Anan said, if the car was reduced in price already the dealers hand may actually be tied when it comes to discount.

Was the car competitively priced to begin with?

As everyone else has said - and speaking as a former sales manager from that Dealer network - they may have already discounted the car to make it competitive. Take the price, and look online for similar cars with similar mileage and see if other dealers are charging the same/more/less, then you'll know if it's competitive or not.

When the good times were rolling, it was possible to get around 1k off a secondhand 1 series when buying straight.

BMW dealer network prices are never competitive.

Competitive in relation to other BMW dealers.

It wasn't competively priced. It may have been the only M-sport around at that moment but nearly every other 116i was below €10k. Now I accept that you get the 1 year warranty and their overheads are higher etc. but I was offered a nice spec ES (or SE, can't remember) that was a year newer with 20k less on the clock for €2k less (see above), and they'd had the M-sport in question for months.
When the good times were rolling, it was possible to get around 1k off a secondhand 1 series when buying straight.
So now the good times are gone, we should get less?

Margins are alot smaller now so less room for negotiation

I accept that, to a degree, although any other car we looked at we were offered at least double, some main dealers some not.

So one dealer played hard ball. It happens. Thread title is a little deceiving in that case

Not tryin to insult ya r anything but you have an 06 with less mileage for 2k less than an 05 and a few others offered for less why not just buy one of them and not moan about the higher price you'v been asked for this one? seems like you have plenty of choice and its the BMW dealers loss at end of the day

This isn't a car for me as such as I like my BM's with less doors and much larger engines - the colour of the better spec '06 was way down the list and we went on holiday the day after, had a think, came back and it was gone...fair enough.

Don't see how the thread title is decieving, it says BMW $tealer in the singular. It's more the derisory amount and how far out of whack they were that I'm discussing, I thought most dealers had 'tuned in' at this stage.

They have tuned in for the most part but if a car is costing too much(as this one obviously is) they will try if anything break even on it before they loose money on it and if that means letting you walk away so be it! Iv done it myself with a few cars, sometimes it works and you get your money back sometimes ya loose your bo!!ox... But I really dont see why, when you'v soo much choice from the others you feel the need to give out about it! Just dont buy it!!
