    Hi legal eagles,

Apologies if this has been asked or discussed before but I have a query that I'm hoping you can clarify. It seems that most jail sentences in Ireland run concurrently. Is this law or is it just standard practice by judges?

    Thanks

AFAIK it is the Judge's discretion to decide whether it should be concurrent or consecutive. It really depends on the nature of the crimes, the history of offending and other mitigating circumstances.

If a crime is committed while on bail it is usually consecutive sentence. Not sure if this is mandatory or not though.

If you're on bail and commit crime then it's a consecutive sentence unless some charge sheets are from the same incident. Remember too the most a district court judge can give is 24 months for multiple offences.

Covered off in detail here before. I am closing this. Use search to find it. I will link it when I have time.
