I'm looking for a place with martial arts and gym in city center

    Hi!

I'd like to find a place in city center where I can learn martial arts (specially self-defence ones or Muai Thai/Kickboxing) and besides a gym where I can do chin-ups, dips, press and squats... But I'm becoming crazy looking for one, the most of them only have martial arts, and I need both, because otherwise I have to pay two different gyms :(

I wanna do martial arts because I like the work out, it's the only way for me to do aerobic job and abdominals :D And also is a good way to release stress.

Yesterday I found one close to Pearse St, they have martial arts (80 euros 10 classes) and a small gym... first the guy told me that they don't have almost equipment in the gym ... after that I could train on my own just till 6pm... and when I respond it could be fine he told me he has to charge me 5€ per day, so that will make around 40-50€ per month, for a incomplete gym opened till 6pm... mad!

    Any idea?

I'm actually taking the muay thai classes and the beginners kettlebell in that club you're talking about. the classes are really good and worth checking out. haven't checked out the gym so can't really comment on that.

the club is www.wildgeesema.com for anyone who's interested

if you want a club that combines martial arts and a gym it might be no harm to check out the itf taekwon do club on exchequer street. it's beside dunnes. when i was going there about a year ago it was €75 a month and you could take 3 classes a week and use the gym as often as you want. the only thing i will say is that I do remember that the gym used to be slightly cramped but they had a pretty good range of equipment.

OP, I'd have suggested Wildgeese too - but your clearly unhappy with that.

RAW gym over at Portabello is both a gym, and its got BJJ, and I believe MMA. too. But I don't know how membership/payment run's for either.

If you can make your way out to Glasnevin/Finglas - then Informed Performance has all you need wrapped up in one package.. Its just a kick in the arse outside of Phibsboro so you won't be trekking through Finglas proper for it.

In Broadstone there's Broadstone Muay Thai. All the contact details for the above are available in the clubs thread in the stickies.

Other than those, I can't think of anything else which might suit your needs in the city center for close to it.

Yeah Wild Geese isn't really ideal as a place where you can just drop in and do your own thing. Broadstone have a rake of pullup bars and some weights in the corner, but not much, and again I don't think it would be suitable for use as a regular gym.

If you're willing to get on the train at Pearse street, you could get to Informed Performance easy enough. It's right beside the Broombridge stop. They've got about 3 power cages, a prowler, astroturf(?!), punch bags and a decent sized area with wrestling mats. No showers though. They also have BJJ, muay Thai, and MMA classes.

    +1.

Sorry Niall, I totally forgot your place.

A little off topic, but a quick question for you. You don't happen to remember a young lad who I believe trained with you a long time again, his Dad's name was Richard Keane, from Bridgefoot St flats by any chance?.

A few of my students are from Bridgefoot Street, but I don't remember training a Keane, that said I'm not too great with remembering surnames, Keane in Irish is O'Cathain, or "grandson of the warrior" wouldn't you know!

    Ahem.

4 power racks, a GHR, 45 back raise, dumbells to 50kg, kettlebells to 40kg, 4 olympic bars, 4 power bars, 1200kg of Zhangkong Olympic bumper plates, a competition boxing ring, 40sqm of 3rd generation field turf, 2 prowlers, 80sqm downstairs Muay Thai gym, 120sqm upstairs BJJ/MMA area, 17ms of cage wall, punchbags, thai pads, kick pads...

    ... but you're right, no showers.:D

As the man said it might not be city centre enough but I reckon we're worth a journey.

    I stand corrected.

The Bridgefoot gym is also fairly decent, if smaller, though I think the gym membership doesn't include the cost of the martial arts. Is that the case Niall?

Wudang students have a rate €220 for the year to use the gym anytime, you dont need mebership to take a class, class prices with me Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday are €7 enemployed / student and €10 for others for a two hour class. But most students have gym membership as they often arrange to meet up and do additional training / sparing several times a week.
It has most weights including kettlebells and clubs, and several machines and they're usually free enough except straight after office hours. Nice atmosphere as many other fighters stroll in and also train there, probably due to the matted room and boxing ring, boxers, wrestlers, sambo etc. So assholes don't hoard benches and equipment dreaming of their next rep.

    I gave up. Finally I've choose self-defence.ie.

The Niall gym looks pretty neat, but it also looks too professional and advanced for me, and I'm looking for something more for beginners. I don't want get my ass hard kicked twice every week... just make a little of sport haha

Now I have to found a cheap gym, this is gonna be a problem too :(
