Back boiler question

IF your no longer going to use a fireplace back boiler can it simple be drained down and capped at the side of the fire place with out the unit cracking when the fire is lit?.
Other query is how is a back boiler normally piped into heating system/ HW cyclinder.
I think the layout in this setup is the oil boiler heats the rads/hot water. The back boiler heats rads/hot water.
I would have thought that the water going through the rad nearest the fire would then travel through the back boiler and onto the next rad. But in the boiler house there seems to be two pumps & two switchs along with two flo & returns. ITs at this point in the boiler house that the back boiler pipes connect into the oil boiler(i think).
Last year in the cold spell with the central heating on, the fire was also running which caused the HW to boil over into the expansion tank.

what ever you do, DONT BLANK THE BACK BOILER AND LIGHT A FIRE, BECAUSE SOMEONE WILL BE KILLED OR BADLY HURT. Your heating would normally run to the cylinder first, building to , say, 50 deg C, and then pump to the rads.Get a good plumber, disconnect and remove the boiler, replace with a plain fireback, and have a safe installation.Sorry, dont wish to be dramatic either, just dont want to creat doubt.

The boiler would have to be decommissioned. It could stay inside the fire place and used as a fire back.

This would mean the back boiler being disconnected from system, and holes be drilled in the back boiler to prevent pressure build up.
