Has anyone recently in the last couple of years gotten onto the Hdip course with just an arts degree? or is there a slim chance of getting a place? Do you need more qualifications like a masters for example?

I've a degree in Maths and will be teaching Maths and Junior Science! The teaching council will only register me as a Maths teacher though!

So far as I know the only subject with a quota is Business and related subjects! For the NUI colleges anyway!

Ooh right! I hope so! haha I cant seem to find much information on it. Also did you apply for it in your 3rd year of your BA or when you got out of college? sorry for all the questions! :P

    That's not how it works.

First you should check the teaching council's website to see if your degree qualifies you to teach any subjects (list is not exhaustive though - but is a good indicator).

Then if you've got a subject to work with you apply for the dip. It is purely based on how many points you have based on your degree/masters etc. Doesn't matter if you have maths, religion, Irish etc. Only one currently that is harder to get into is business because the powers that be decided to make that one harder as there were too many business teachers.

Plenty of people get onto the hdip with just an Arts degree. You need a good degree but it's entirely possible.

Well I graduated last year so applied after I'd finished my degree. If you apply during your final year your points will be based on your penultimate years results and if you apply after you've graduated it'll be based on your final result. Look on the PAC website for this years points and you should be able to check how many points you'd have based on your results from last year!

yeah iv checked my degree and its recognised by the teaching council. Iv just been hearing it's harder to get onto the hdip course now and more people are applying with masters and everything so they have more points than people without. But id only be applying with my Degree!

So therefore you should definitely do the one with the inbuild education component. It'd be terrible to spend the four years studying and then not get the course. You'd need a high 2.1 realisticly. One flu and that could screw up your marks and you'd be faced with repeating the year, or doing a postgrad.

I got it this year with a reasonable 2.1 GPA of about 3.4-3.5.
