recently got 3 broadband as party of National Broadband Scheme . for past three years had very slow broadband roughly half meg down .2 up!!!
overall happy so far but 2 issues have cropped up

1 to get signal had to place modem/router (Huawei B260a) in upstairs bedroom. i was told i would get speeds of up to 7mb but got 3mb (still a lot better than b4). 3 send me a repeater/booster which has had the effect of drastically REDUCING the speed down to half meg!!!!!
has anyone had similar situation. i have just stopped using the booster but find it very strange

    2. laptop and xbox constantly disconnect from wireless network which means going up to reset router. has anyone had similar experience??
i have now connected the 3 modem/router to my old wireless router to see if this solves it

A repeater will only improve signal quality, and would probably never improve speed, but I've never heard of them reducing the speed. What is your speed without the repeater?

Wifi networks can suffer from interference very easily. First thing to do is change the channel to anything other than what it's currently on. Next would be to reduce the distance between the router and the connected device. Also try a wired connection to see if it's the router or the Wifi at fault.

    Did it?

    thanks for reply

speed without booster ir around 3/3.5. very strange that booster is significantly reducing this.

i did not want to leave router upstairs as its far from lap top and also in bedroom . however this is omly place in house decent signal is received.

the connection has not yet dropped with new set up (fingers crossed)

Yes, in theory a Repeater can reduce speed for neighbour too.
It runs on a different channel. 3 Ireland has only got three channels. If there is some pickup from another sector on same mast or a different mast then speed will reduce.

The repeater isn't designed to improve Signal quality. An outdoor directional aerial high on wall or Chimney is the ONLY way to do that. Mostly repeaters will reduce signal quality a bit. The reason for the repeater (and only cabled ones do it properly, the 5.8GHz WiFi ones used by 3 are the worst choice) is primarily to give Mobile phone coverage at back of metal Shop unit or warehouse by putting one part at one of the few windows. Those are not designed for a Domestic situation with lots of windows.

Repeaters are bad. The indoor/client part (femto cell) is only meant to be used somewhere with no egress or ingress of RF to outdoors. This is why it's technically only legal for a Licensed Operator to install.

Also if it's wireless rather than wired, then the 5.8GHz band is used. The 5.8GHz is used by 802.11a and better 802.11n WiFi, some CE marked but possibly illegal in Ireland Baby Monitors, security systems and Video Senders as well as Registered but Licence Free Fixed Wireless Broadband.

3 should have been forbidden to use Repeaters in ordinary Domestic scenario by Comreg. It's a dangerously disruptive technology when misused like this. What they should have (as used in other Countries) is outdoor box with aerial and a 3G Modem wired via CAT5 to internal WiFi + Router.

One can only assume that 3 want to improve mobile phone coverage and sell multiple 3G dongles in houses with Repeaters. The NBS should have at the very least MANDATED a solution with fixed outdoor aerial and indoor ethernet port, as is the ONLY OECD accepted figures for 3G used for Broadband.

Even at this stage Comreg should force 3 to replace all repeaters in normal Domestic situations with off the shelf outdoor 3G modem/aerial connected by cable to indoor ethernet. The proper "off the shelf" solution works better and costs less than a Nextivity Repeater.

NBS is subsidizing a Mobile Phone rollout not Rural Broadband when these repeaters are used.

Maybe the outside bit of the repeater is facing in , turn it 180 degrees and see what happens :) If indoor repeaters will not work then try to get the outdoor repeater from 3 instead.

Sorry, I should have said strength, not quality.

Any recommendation for an off-the-shelf product?
