Presentation of Prizes

I've become aware over the past couple of years that Sunday evening/night presentations are not well supported and in fact can be a disaster.
Firstly, 2 or 3 of the winners, especially 3rd to 5th placed winners do not show. Secondly, some that do show are not dressed suitably e.g. collarless T-shirts etc. and finally, very few members and fellow golfers stay behind for the presentation leaving only the recipients applauding themselves. Embarrassing for the club and the sponsor.

How does your club address these issues? Any ideas on how some of these issues might be addressed?

This was the case for a while at our club. Now we hold prizegivings once a month so there are usually 4 comps being awarded on the one night. Not a perfect solution but it helps with attendance.

    :D

Its a non issue or issue of your own making I think. The bottom line is that nobody wants to go to presentations -speeches by rote that we could all recite in our sleep. Why not accept the reality and just have prizes for collection from the office or bar and no presentation at all. Presentations for Captains, Presidents, and one or two other major competitions if your club has them. Expecting a turnout for another generic stableford competition presentation is flogging a dead horse - and I dont really understand why people want the horse to run in the first place.

    Could not agree more.

Because without prizegiving nights there won't be prizes. Sponsors deserve something in return and it shouldn't be too much to ask for prizewinners to turn up and collect them.

Though I do agree they are boring as all hell.

    Presentations smesintations........

As a player and a sponsor form time to time I'd rather have a rusty old sand wedge chipping away at my skull than go and listen to any of that old sh1t

Thankfully I don't and there are1 or 2 nights in the year when all this is done

And as a sponsor our club gives you a few free tee times and has a sponsors day out which is more than enough thanks

I agree that they can be boring affairs..."I'd like to thank the sponsor, the course was in great condition, the prizes are lovely etc..." same repertoire. But as Jasonw says it's about giving the sponsor something back. In fact, in our club, a press photographer HAS to be organised for the presentation and if they don't appear in the local press the following week with a write-up heads roll.
Monthly presentations were discussed but the comp sec said that the sponsors didn't want to share the limelight. Interesting to hear from a sponsors perspective. 'soundsham'. There have been times when all winners and photographer turned up and NO sponsor show.
I think there is no quick fix then to this. Most sponsors expect recognition. Some winners wont turn up and members wont support.

Id never go to one again unless I won at one of the major comps. I won my category at the presidents a few weeks back. I got a call saying the presentation starts at 9.30pm so I show up for that time. I meet the caddy of one of my playing partners (who won the comp) at the bar, quick chat blah blah & he didnt even ask if Id like to join them for a drink! The bar was empty at this stage like. So I just sat at the bar & drank a coffee.

People started to filter in around 10.30pm but nothing happened until 11pm. 11pm!!! It was like an episode of phoenix nights. One man band in the corner, horrible atmosphere. A full hour & half of small talk with whoever was beside me ordering a drink, two coffees & one sh!te to kill some time. I wished Id won nothing!

Presentation didnt finish until 11.30pm. Two whole hours after the time I was told it would start. On a Sunday night. FU*K THAT!

Two things that annoy me at 'away' clubs when i've to go and collect a prize - they never start on time (or anywhere close to the time you were told to be there for) and secondly. Most of the time when the prize is clothing you have to go back to change a size or swap it for something you actually like anyway so it means two trips to the same 'away' course. Would it really be that hard for the official, when he rings to ask you if you'll be at the prize-giving, to enquire as to what size you are?

Unless i've won i tend just to go collect the prize another day when the pro shop is actually open and i can swap the prize.

In general, clubs don't help themselves when it comes to prize givings.

Agree totally with time of presentations...if they say 10pm Sunday night that's it! Not 11pm or 11:30pm. Also, the press photographer wont hack that...he's away for sure.
No one's a winner in that scenario!
