Anybody know the story in relation to public car auctions?

Are these auctions a fleecing of the gullible or are there actually some decent cars to be had?

Both I would say. However currently the auction prices are so near forecourt prices that they just dont make sense at all in most cases. You can ignore all the crap on the papers about half price deals. One example the papers had was .... HALF PRICE range rovers at auction. Reading on, it turned out it was an 06 or 07 range rover selling for half new price. That sounds pretty normal to me, perhaps even on expensive side.

From being at merlin auction a good few times, there is the odd cheap car but these bargains are few & far between & certainly if you are looking for something popular, there are zero bargains to be had now as there are too many private buyers bidding all the way up to retail prices in some cases. Certainy when all fees are added, the prices now are crazy considering that there is always the chance of buying a lemon too.

Lots of Good and bad cars at auction. its all about checking them out. Cars can come from private people, good big garages , dodgy garages finance houses liquidations etc etc.

So its all about the condition of the car and the reserve price, however no warranty but the money saved on dealer price can make it worth the risk. ~I'd prefer to buy at auction than the side of the road or some dodgy estate at least your getting good title. If the car is under manufacturers warranty then it should be a safe bet.
