If you are still amoung us as a visitor I hope you might consider a "reincarnation" before STS-133:)

    He re-surfaced briefly as Whynotdo!:pac:

With a bit of luck he's reading and will reconsider. Won't be the same without him. Bad enough the Shuttle getting retired,we don't need Ynotdu retired too!!

Beeker has it right. Part of the furniture on here was ynotdu.

Hopefully you'll be back soon lad.

Y did he leave?!? This is terrible news and I only knew him for a little while. I think this board is the best-kept secret in the world for NASA fans. Well it is none of my business and I want to thank him for his heroic dedication to the Space Program. Texas salutes Ynotdu.

ynotdo unsubscribed from the forum, because I suggested to a user who was discussing a moon hoax theory, that it might be better suited in the conspiracy forum. I later sent a private message to the original user with a genuine apology for the way I presented my post, because my post came across as rude. The user accepted my apology with no problems.

ynotdo then decided to create a thread in this forum, rather than sending me a private message or messaging a moderator - attacking my character, and taking the matter seriously out of proportion. I was more than cordial in response. A moderator moved the said thread to the recycle bin. ynotdo then created a second thread in this forum once again attacking me, stating that I was the reason that they had unsubscribed from the forum.

I genuinely didn't aim to push anyone away from this forum, and I feel that ynotdo took the issue way out of proportion. Their post came across as very personal, and I have a feeling that their disliking of me had stemmed from political disagreements we had on occasion over on the politics forum. If someone unsubscribes from a forum because a poster asked another poster to post on the conspiracy forum about a moon hoax - then there are obviously other issues behind it.

On a personal level - I never had any issues with ynotdo, so their attack came completely out of nowhere and caught me off guard.

I'm sorry if you guys miss ynotdo's helpful and insightful posts.

I've often pointed users towards a more suitable forum, so don't see it as too much of an issue

Shame to loose a good poster over such minor things but maybe he'll comeback in the future

ok I rarely post here, but im a daily lurker, afaik he said something like 'id rather leave than report someone', ive big respect for that if its thats the case. Reporting someone on a messageboard has to be one of the saddest things someone could do on the internet ffs.

it's just the way the site works, it helps the mods to draw attention to any spam, problem posts etc. it keeps the site clean for discussion and threads stay on topic. I know in the photography forum on some threads there are rules like not quoting photos and keeping the photo size below a certain limit, minor things easy for new users not to know but was a problem that annoyed some people and people pointing it out on thread annoyed other people and mods don't see everything, so the recommended thing to do was report posts. I know it sounds harsh but reporting a post just highlights it for review, the mod can look and decide what to do and it's the end of it. Maybe on other message boards it's more serious to report a post but again I don't see an issue with reporting a post if there's some reason behind it. It's up to users to decide what there own tolerance is and everything, I just wouldn't be too critical of anybody reporting a post in a lot of situations even if I mightn't do the same myself

As I was the person who (unwittingly) started this kerfuffle, I would just like to say that dlofnep did apologise (twice) and I accepted his apology without hesitation and absolutely no offence was taken. I just got over-enthusiastic one afternoon while listening to Dr Martin Hendry on the Mooney show on Radio 1 and if I thought that so many people would have gotten so upset in the aftermath, I would never have hit the 'submit' button.

ynotdu-you were very kind to defend me but I think it's time we all moved on. In the grand scheme of things, this is so trivial. Just from what I know of you from reading your posts on the forum, not posting or being involved in the banter must be killing you. Nothing is worth that. When I log in, this is the first forum I check and I like a lot of people on here, I always look forward to reading your stuff. Though Beeker and LL are keeping the boat afloat, without you, the triumvirate is incomplete. It's like a 3-legged horse in the Grand National-something is missing. So come on, put this incident behind you and start posting again.

    Please.

Normally this would not be the place to persist on the topic but in light of the updated global charter this thread would be more beneficial to current and potential future members than detrimental to this board.

The thread in question is still located in the recycle bin

As this was not the place to discuss or resolve such an issue. The powers that be have clearly stated the protocol for such disputes. ynotdu unfortunately did not follow this tried and true procedure.

The original thread that supposedly started it all is still located here:
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056012808

To take an official stance on the circumstances that led to a member voluntarily leaving the boards, i would like to say that i do not fault dlofnep for his comment as it was inkeeping within the guidelines of the charter, at the time i did not see anything wrong with it and i still dont. to be honest i may have responded in much a similar way given the nature of the topic. Conspiracy topics are a big no no here, and to quote dlofnep on that comment there is a dedicated section of the boards for them for a very good reason

It is an unfortunate set of circumstances to say the least, i am still unsure of why the issue was taken so personally so very quickly, if the proper action was taken i feel there could have been a satisfactory resolution for all, This is why Boards has its rules and procedures in place.

I want him back too but for another reason in addition to those already mentioned; I'm convinced that the apparently random scattering of capitalised words in his posts contain an important secret message. In fact, as I type it's becoming clearer: he grew frustrated that we didn't get the message, resulting in his resignation. The other disagreement was just a smokescreen so he could get away without questions.

Ynotdu, I think I nearly had it! Come back and give me my John Nash fix!

Hmmm, maybe I'll head over to CT with that one...

    * since this thread series has a certain amount of tension already, I'll explicitly say all the above is meant to be taken in a jocular fashion. In other threads I've already directly conveyed to ynotdu how I genuinely value the content of his posts.

I missed all this at the time but reading over the now closed original posts and follow-ons etc., it all seemed much ado about nothing really. Dlofnep even going out of his way to apologise over something he didn't really need too either, but did anyway.
I liked the lads posts' he made on this particular forum, would like to see him back too. We all have our moments and bad hair days I guess but it takes more to swallow a bit of pride and admit to yourself you maybe went off on one and over-reacted a little, than it does to just walk away from it never to return.

I too hope he comes back. Doubtful though, as this place seems to be filling up with smart arses, pointing the way to other forums. Know- it -alls who want to trample on other peoples thoughts. BUsy bodys.

Used to be this place was a place of wonderment for ALL, not just the experts.

Not just this forum either, there are plenty of selfstyled experts on other forums too, who if you say or ask anything out of the norm, direct you to the Conspiracy Forum. Go fcuk yourselves.

leave the mods to do the directing.

Cant blame him for pissing off.

It's a forum about Astronomy, not UFO's, not Aliens, not silly stories about whether the moon landing was faked or other such nonsense. People can believe what they want and discuss what they want but there's particular forums for set topics.
Astronomy is scientific in nature and there's still much to learn by everyone. If a new person was to wander in to this forum and see it flooded by discussions on UFO's, Aliens, Astrology and so forth - it'd become a mess. The mods do a fine job but they're not here all the time. Nobody is telling people to piss off or jumping all over them, for the most part all they've done is kindly suggest there are other forums better suited to discuss such matters, with probably like minded people who believe in such.

Personally I still think boards needs a particular forum dealing with "Astrological Anomalies" - taking into consideration everything to do with UFO's, possible sightings of same, discussions on the matter and so forth - it would take a fair whack away from the Astronomy forum at least. There is no such place on boards to discuss such at the moment and it doesn't fit into a Conspiracy Theory type forum either.
Another one I'd like to see would be a forum maybe called "The Universe and the possibilities of life" which would take away discussion relating Aliens, terraforming theories and so forth.

I'd have a lot to discuss and would enjoy reading input on same but it doesn't belong in Astronomy, nor CT, nor any particular place on boards at the moment and maybe that is an issue that needs to be addressed separately, leaving Astronomy for what it should be.

I just think there should be a little leeway here, even things that seem set in stone, may not be.

Galileo,Copernicus etc based their theories on logic and scientific reasoning, examining the evidence before them and coming to conclusions based on this evidence.
The people who denounced and decried them were basing their reasoning on nothing more than ideas people had, superstitions and "beliefs".
In your comparison, the so called "selfstyled experts" here, are actually the Galileos and the "Alterntives" are the Church....etc. :D
Galileo would have been kicked out of the "Main" forum and sent to the fledgling little science forum.

UFO's do not fall under the category of astrology, astrology has a very clear subject however amazingly inconsistent and misunderstood the ancient practice is among individuals who claim to profess it

The boards has a Paranormal section to discuss such matters, which occur frequently there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,717 ✭✭✭Nehaxak

I actually didn't mean Astrological in that sense, wrong choice of wording maybe. Probably "Cosmic Anomalies" would be a better choice.

I also meant discussion in the scientific sense rather than a paranormal sense but I take your point for sure :)

Beeker i don't know if i should thank You or kill You for starting this thread.
The whole point i was trying to make was that the A&S was a little 'Sea of Tranquility' to Me on boards.

Quite true i was apprehensive when dlofnep started posting as i knew his tendency at times to use jackboots when a feather would do.
    The alternative scenerio was for him to PM fifilure and ask that she PM Slade-x or Redshift to say She had boo bood and could they move it to the CT forum.[I double posted once and Slade-x fixed it for Me in a jiffy!}

I suspect that dlofnerp jumped on the report button twice once for the Moon-ey thread and then my objection to the back seat modding, although Redshift and Slade-x moderate the forum fine they are not usually that quick to clean up dubious posts.
a careful reading of the Moon-ey post reads to Me like it was taking the pis* out of the CT's about Apollo anyway.
also whoever deleted it did they know at the time if the professor was debunking the Moonlanding hoax theory or not?

I got a yellow card on the CT forum when in the face of overwhelming evidence one poster refused to see the facts and said He was going to bed,I wished him good night and said i hoped his underground bunker was comfortable and that He would not forget to put his tooth under the pillow for the fairys before writing his letter to Santa, I soon realised as soon as one moon hoax theory ended on the CT forum another started...........

Why i chose to unsubscribe was the haste My post "in defence of fifilure" was moved tothe re-cycle bin.

The sequence of events was i asked dlofnerp could he not have PM'd fifilure before PM'd her

dlofnerp i was prejudiced against You as You have been very cruel in posts in the past. However i hope the thank you's Beeker received on post #1 did not come across to You as being against You as i do not consider the thanks You received as being against Me.[quite frankly many of the thanked posts across the threads are very contradictory.]

@eiljah Ireland salutes Texas:) You get Your ass back here also!

@ Jake1 yes the broadcast forums are being back seat modded quite a lot also. Boards will have to give guidance to Mods what constitutes back seating and what does not.

@Nehaxak it was not much ado about nothing,it was about all of those things that Astronomers and Space enthusists spend long lonely hours observing what few are interested in and having a forum were they could tell the whole world about something that thrilled them.
One of My favourite posts was not so long ago when a poster who uploaded a photo he took of the Moon with a camphone got a bit of gentle ribbing and He said "It is My first one and i feel strangely proud of it". To Me that was as inspiring as Hubbles finest!
I did not want the smooth flowing joy to be trampled on by Cynacism and see it disintergrate into just another 'Squabbling' Forum!(there are plenty of them)

@Calibos Lol at Your frustration about 'Chinese Lanterns'
You have tried being nice and being nasty to no avail.
Have You any hair left? My solution would be to close A&S on saturday nights after pub closing time.;)

@Backboiler,I will use ITALICS in future to emphasise a point.
Which of the John Nash's am i:confused:

John Nash may refer to: I am afraid to get My message You will have to read the Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy like everybody else!Squeek squeek.

@Slade-x i am well aware of the reasons why Moon hoax theorys are not allowed here having over the last twelve months read ALL:P the archives since this forum was established seven years ago(belated congratulations on being made a Mod in 2005!:P]

Do i get the fatted calf or the boot now?:p

You suspect wrongly. I didn't report that post. The moderators here can verify that. You went off on a tangent for no reason when the moderator himself said he would have replied in a similar manner to my post. The only reason I posted in this thread was to clarify what happened.

The PM wasn't necessary. I sent it to her out of courtesy, and not because you asked me to.

I don't think you should be discussing the contents of private messages on public forums. If she said anything negative about me - that's fine. My post was a bit rude, and she's entitled to be a little upset about it.

I'm not bothered. If you have an issue with my manner of posting, just place me on ignore. That's what the function is there for, instead of creating off-topic threads trying to get attention. I'll do the same, as I have no desire to discuss anything further with you. Let's drop it here. I have been more than courteous with my responses and that's as far as my patience goes with you.

That's just a tirade of a rant against dlofnep who has been more than courteous in responses, very unfair imo. If you can't debate with the guy in a civilised manner or can't discuss with him outside of other forums you might disagree with his opinions in, then just don't bother and do as he says and place him on ignore. What you've done here with your opportunity to respond, in a thread created to ask for you to come back, is just childish.

I still stand over it being much ado about nothing, at least to everyone else.

My flawed logic was in order for Me to "get the feeling back" i needed to offload the remnants of ill feeling that were left from posts from the past.

fifilure You always made a poster here feel like they were not posting to themselves by a little word of encouragement or a simple thank You.I love you for that:)

    Hi All ,

If i might make a suggestion ....... im not taking any sides here , but comments
like its much ado about nothing ( even if true ) are only adding to the already burning fire.
It Obviously matters a great deal both to Ynotdo AND dlofnep , Sometimes in life its harder
to let go than to stop

There are no winners here in this thread ,

I love this forum , all i say is let there be Light and Peace .

    My suggestion is ...........

Please CLOSE this thread and let it be a
NEW BEGGINING for you 2 guys .......

    With Respect

    Regards to all !!
