Hi, I have a new Sky HD box & although I can view the "Other channels", it doesn't seem possible to record them, or pre set to record them, Is there any way around this?

    It's mainly ITV1 ITV2 UTV BBC3 & 4.

    Regards
    Myles

Its a shame but unfortunetly you cannot record them using your sky box, you could try and hook it upto a dvd recorder or vcr...but this wont always work either depends on make of your dvd recorder etc..

Would it be possible if I got a UK viewing card? & if so, how practical would it be to keep swapping them?

This won't work either unless you had a valid UK Sky+/Recording sub enabled on the card as well.

Get a Humax HD Freesat PVR to record free channels for Free. It might even work for Saorsat next year.

    Hi Watty,

Thanks for that, & sorry for being ignorant, but you may have well said that in Chinese  . What exactly is that & where would I get one & any idea of cost?

    Regards

Faigh HD Humax Freesat PVR a thaifeadadh bealaí saor in aisce do saor in aisce. D'fhéadfadh sé ag obair go fiú Saorsat an bhliain seo chugainn.

Humax: A brand/Manufactuer of set-boxes like Sky Digibox.
PVR: A box that records on internal Hard Drives
Freesat: The "branding" of UK collection of Free Satellite TV and Radio channels. Most of the better channels on "Sky" are actually Freesat. No pay Channel has more than 2% viewing time.
HD: High Definition. 1080 lines instead of regular 576 visible lines in European 625 TV.
Saorsat: The Irish equivalent of Freesat starting in 2011, a copy of Saorview, the Irish Digital TV system..

I'm trying to explain it all here in plain English :)http://www.techtir.ie/saortv

Which is hard as I have worked with TV & Radio many years.

I do remember that someone posted a method which does work for recording FTA channels like ITV1, ITV2 etc. with an Irish Sky subscription. I cannot remember the exact details but it is here somewhere.

A UK Sky+ only sub did exist at about £15. You need a UK postcode address and UK card of course.

I doubt any other method short of removing the hard drive and plugging it in to PC will playback even if you record somehow without a sub. Sky box adds extra layer of encryption to all channels and records all channels without CAM. Then on playback the signal can ONLY go via CAM, thus a suitable card is needed to decrypt even FTA channels.

I never heard of this before. Interesting if there is a magic sequence that allows it. If there is some clever scheme it needs at least an Irish Sub that records and plays some channels.

I think you need to take your sky card out of the box and let the box reset so that BBC 1 is on 101 ITV 103 etc, then put the card back in the box and hit record before box resets to the Irish set up. I may have missed out a step but that's close enough I think. It does work, I tried it myself a while back.

AFAIK step 3 is unnecessary - certainly it worked for me without removing and replacing the feeds

Just tried this and can confirm that it works on my HD box.

There is no need to disconnect the satellite input feeds.

    Here's what I did.

    1. Remove sub card
    2. Turn off power at mains
    3. Put card in upsidedown
    4. Reconnect power - UK EPG loads up
    5. Select FTA channel (I used BBC HD to test)
    6. Put card in right way up and press record straight away.

BBC HD records and the Irish EPG reverts after a moment or two (possibly after changing channels).

Excellent find! Another step closer to being able to use Sky+/HD+ to record all channels that it can receive.

    I presume it plays back?

It's possible you do it without power off/on if this works..[/B]
    1. Go to 501 (Sky News) , selecting interactive, remove card after it loads.
    2. Backup and when UK EPG has loaded, select UK desired channel
    3. re-insert valid sub card and hit record before Irish EPG loads.

EDIT: Yes reading thread that DOES work http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=64051294&postcount=18

It absolutely plays back. I had a few BBC HD programmes on my hard drive before it launched on the Irish EPG.

Tried this last nite. Recorded Minder off ITV4. After slotting my card back in and pressing Record, I just put box into standby as normal and the whole programme recorded completely and is now sitting in my planner. I played sections of it to make sure it had recorded fully. It had.

This will definately come in handy now and again. Great find.
