    Alrighty....

Make your plans. Plan your routes. Decide what the ideal specific firearm and melee weapon will be and have your ditch bag already to go. Spend hours of time researching all possible escape routes and places to hide. Force your friends to sign contracts ensuring they will double-tap ya if you happen to get infected. Use all your spare time doing this.

Then - the day happens - and you are no where near any of your stuff and every plan you've made has gone out the window. Worthless.

What do you do now? What skills do you have, or rather, what skills SHOULD you have to survive the apocalypse?

List 'em up in addition to a reason why that particular skill will be useful.

About 6 years or martial arts under my belt for close combat,
I've been in the scouts since the age of 9 so I'm fairly well equipped for survival with little food, shelter

fitness is good so when I need to move I can

3 years in the RDF giving me weapons training

A stupid amount of knowledge on Z's.... all types :P

I'd like to think if push comes to shove I've plans for everything, but I know that improvisation will be the most impportant key in this equation of survival

    EDIT:
also I've been in the red cross for 7 years so I've a pretty good level of first aid behind me as well

So, to paraphrase for ya Paul, and correct me where I'm wrong, your list of skills you'd find useful would be:

    1. Basic wilderness survival
    2. Physical fitness
    3. Hands-on firearm training/practice
    4. ZedUcation - aka knowin' lots about Z's
    5. Basic First Aid (added after edit)

What do you bring to the table Dakota?

Me, I like to kill dead things.

I'm gonna go with a fallout-like tag skill thing here

Scavenger: never throws away things that may have a purpose no matter how unlikely it is.
    +1 to survival and luck
-1 to run skill (due to extra pack weight)

First Aid: You recieved a cert for completion of a rudimentary first aid course, You can now perform CPR, use bandages, make tourniquets and splints as well as avoid infection through carelessness. You're no heart surgeon but minor injuries are less of a problem to you.
    +1 to health and stamina

    Coward: You are Arnold Rimmer.
    +2 to survival
    -2 social skills
    -2 melee and firearms
-2 to all stats except survival if you are in any form of group.

Mainly I was less concerned about what I'm good at now and rather curious as to what general skills people would LIKE to have. An ideal skill set, if ya will.... something to work towards.

I'm planning on working on a few odd useful skills and thought this little discussion might help.

But I'll post my list later - too busy rolling dice at the moment. :D

    What I'd currently bring...

    1. Access to and experience with quantities of firearms and ammunition.
    2. Able to reload spent brass.
    3. Proficient w/ recurve and compound bows.
    4. Basic wilderness survival and tracking.
    5. Big/small game hunting.
    6. Certified First Aid/CPR.
    7. Lots of computer kung-fu which will be worthless.
    8. Books/knowledge - lots of ref manuals, etc on survival related subjects.
    9. Leadership and negotiation talents

Otherwise - mechanically I'm rather nil and, in general, I am not the handiest person in the world. I'd do well to improve some pretty simple skills like gardening, construction, electrical, plumbing, and others. My physical fitness could stand improvement as well - not terrible but theres room for improvement.

ive got basic first aid too, spent a few years wearing the face off a CPR doll :-)

i would think any skills in farming would be a plus, if you've found somewhere secure and started to try grow things again. would animals survive ?

Oh yeah... a little face-sucking w/ Ressesi-Annie. At least that what our cpr doll was named. :D

As for farming and animals - HUGE yes to farming/gardening skills. Ideally you'd find someplace you could use them. Its labor intensive work so getting good yields from what you plant would be pretty key.

And if you could find domesticated stock animals cows, chickens, pigs, etc (at least thats what we have around here) you could raise them - but then you'd need a good amount of space and resources as they all need food/water too.

hey i watched resident evil 3 the other night and the birds got infected from chewing on the infected' eyeballs basically, so do you think it would spread to animals ? im thinking yes. if you can cover the area where the cattle other animals were with mesh etc then they might be ok, but birds are pretty hard to avoid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭SmileyPaul

theres a lot that resident evil doesn't take into account
If I were you I'd read WWZ and the zombie survival guide by maz brooks, he clears up a lot of details about animals and the spread of the infection.

If the virus was to spread via animals then its unfortunate to say not many people would be safe, simply a fly landing on you could potentially pass on the virus to you, 99% of drinkable water would be polluted as well as most fresh sources simply from minute amounts of the virus simply being around the area.

imagine the bird flu.. remember that? now imagine it wasn't just one species of birds that could spread it, every form of animal, from you're humblest of house flies to a pack of ravage wolves. and then if you think about it that would mean the virus would be able to evolve to suit each thing it infect... which would eventually lead to the infection of plants, making them inedible :P

    so.... thats a yes ? :P

My assumption, or hope maybe :D, is that the virus will only be transmittable from human to human. Animals will be food sources for Z and human alike and not carriers. If things go the way Max and SmileyPaul suggest - then it really doesn't matter what you do.

Just save that last round in the clip for yourself - last one out turn out the lights please. cheers

Advanced knowledge in Mechanical services, from heating/to steam/to sewer etc. How is that useful?

I can design and install a central heating system that does not need electricity to work. set up workable sewage scheme's also with no power. I could design and install a fairly complex rain weather gathering system, again no power. Solar panels etc.

I have a good knowledge of electrics if we do have power :P. Nothing too complex but systems that would come in handy and to service and maintain.

Good understanding of the enemy. Mentally prepared. Could be fitter.

Country boy at heart so am used to animals/hard work.

Excellent horsemanship. Can break and train young horses, they may be the future for all your transport needs.
