basic squares and roots

    If you have a base (for example 5) with a fraction as the index (i.e 2/3) does this mean that you square it first and then find the cubed root?

    Basic question I know but I cant get my head around it, maths was never my strong point :(

    That's the idea yeh but it doesn't matter which you do first

    e.g.

    [latex] \displaystyle 8^{(2/3)} = (8^2)^{1/3} = (8^{1/3})^{2} [/latex]
