    hey all,
just wondering is there a list or an old thread with items I should check when looking at a used car - particularly bearing in mind the nct?

it is always advisable to have a car you intend to purchase looked over by a professional mechanic that you bring with you , i dont mean every car you look at just one you intend to purchase

Searching the Motors Forum for the two keywords 'check' and 'buying' (after selecting 'Search Titles Only' in the dropdown box under the Keyword box) will give you about 10 threads of interest.

Search this Forum > Advanced Search is your friend. :D

pop the bonnet, Look for oil leaks around the rocker cover, oil seeping down the block. Check oil/fluids levels, If the owner says that it was recently serviced pop off the air box to see if the air filter is new, also check the oil filter too see how old it looks. Check when the cam belt was last changed.

Take the car for a spin around town look for an area with speed bumps, drive ocer theses and keep an ear out for knocking noises. Get under the car and check the state of the rubber bushings, Check the exhaust for holes, worn gaskets.

Check that the shocks are not leaking

Check the shut lines on each panel to see that they are even.

Open the boot and pull the boot matt up and check for any signs for a shunt from the rear.
Check the lights to see if there is any cracks in the lenses as these can be quite expensive to replace.

Also beware of adds on done deal "timing belt and water pump done last week" this can be an expensive job to do so ask for receipt or proof that work was done, amazes me how many cars for sale now a days have "just had a full service" + "timing belt just done"

Hope this is of some help
