John Cusack will portray Edgar Allan Poe in “The Raven,” a fictional thriller being directed by James McTeigue, the Wachowskis protege who last helmed “Ninja Assassin.”
Aaron Ruder and Glen Basner of FilmNation are producing.
The story is set in the last five days of Poe's life in which he is forced to partner with a detective in search of a serial killer who has kidnapped Poe's fiancé and has gone on a spree of murders that mimics the author's work.
The project begins shooting on Oct. 25, with Budapest and Serbia standing in for 1849 Baltimore.
The project has been in the works for a while and has had to contend with several acting reversals. Joaquin Phoenix and Ewan McGregor were in talks to play Poe at several points in “Raven’s” development. Jeremy Renner had been attached since last year as the detective but just this week bolted to “Mission: Impossible 4.”

Oh no! Mission Impossible 4. :(

As for The Raven, hmmm...meh. If they could write a decent Detective story they would and they would call it something original. There would be no need to hack Edgar Allen Poe into the story.

Cusack seems a strange choice considering the other 3 actors mentioned but he could be great in the role. This kind of reminds me of The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft in it's concept.

I think I read novel years back with a very similar storyline to this, twas called "asmodeus" IIRC

It sounds like an absolutely ridiculous conscept, so it'll probably work out. I can't help thinking it'll have a weird, surreal Indie film vibe to it, especially with Cusack as Poe.

And if anyone thought that casting was odd, Sylvester Stallone is working on a Poe biography himself, where he originally wanted to also play Poe!

We now have our first look at John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in the upcoming period-thriller The Raven. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the story has Poe teaming up with a detective (played by Luke Evans) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancée (Alice Eve) and gone on a murder spree that recalls Poe’s stories.
Hit the jump to check out Cusack looking Poe-y.

Surprised to see this was the only thread on this flick. Sorry to be bring it back to life, but thought it was better than creating a new one.

Saw this today and really enjoyed it. Some of the movie logic was a little off but overall it was fairly well put together. I thought Cusack looked like he was actually having fun, something he hasn't looked like on film in a long time. The female lead however was painfully bad. The rest of the cast all hold their own and build up a nice ensemble that you want to see succeed.

It wasn't at all like I expected, even had a bit of the saw like gore in it, as well as some "high brow" comedy in the form of obscure literary references. the ending was a little Hollywood but not horrible. A solid 3/5 movie.

I enjoyed it a lot too, actually. Much different to what I'd expected and I agree about Cusack seeming to have fun on it.

On the strength of this thread, I went to see it this evening. Most enjoyable.
Pity there were only three of us in the cinema.

Nice to hear that the thread inspired you to see it. :) Same here though. It was me, my girlfriend and two other dudes in the cinema, both of them alone. Upsetting to see at a good film.
