    Hi all,

I have a dilemna! I have a new shape 2008 Ford Mondeo which I am currently trying to sell.

I won't post the link in case it's advertising!

I am considering downgrading to a Mondeo (old shape) 2.2TDCi ST as shown. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1917084.htm

This is to free up some cash or perhaps buy a classic Escort or Sierra or something. My current Mondeo is a Zetec, I'm wondering if I downgrade will I find it hard to adjust?!

    …………..Response please! :D

How much money will you actually free up though? I can't see you getting that ST landed and registered for less than €10k, and how much would you get for an 08 mondeo?

I for one wouldn't consider that a downgrade...

I'd expect around 14,500 for the Mondeo.

Shopping around, you might have the ST landed for around 9, with a bit of haggling.

Even if I had 5,000 it'd be fine.

How long have you had the Mondeo for and what did you pay for it. that will define if you're mad or not to be honest.

Honestly, I think the older ones were probably the better cars, but there isn't much difference.

Think of it like this, you get better interior, better engine, better extras, better everything and underneath the body it's probably more or less the same car anyhow.

I'd always prefer an older car with a better engine and spec over a new poverty spec'ed car.

    Is Zetec poverty spec ?
When I lived in Galway a housemate had a 2008 Zetec Mondeo, 'twas far from poverty spec. I can read, thanks ;)

My current Mondeo is a Zetec (New Shape remember!) with Cruise control, dual zone aircon, 17inch alloys, etc etc.

I bought it in April and paid the same as I'm looking for it now.

I for one wouldn't consider that a downgrade...

I for 2 would agree with you.

Especially if the Mondeo the OP is currently driving is either a 1.6 or (more likely) the 1.8Tdci.

I did not imply, that the Zetec was poverty spec'ed. I wrote, that the ST had better spec.

I then continued to say, that I'd always go for a well spec'ed older car with a bigger engine instead of a new poverty spec'ed car, in any case.

I wouldn't buy a Mondeo in the first place .. but that's a different story.

Well, you're talking about freeing up some money, so you have to look at the bigger picture.

A 2005 car will be under the old motortax system (not co2 based), so for a 2.2 you're going to pay around 700 eur/year in motor tax ? Depending on how many km's you cover over the year, you need to calculate that in.

A bigger engined car also might cost you more in insurance. As you didn't state, what engine your Zetec has, that's hard to know for us.

Personally, I have a '99 and a '01, because I don't like the value loss of a car with the same power and extras from new and I prefer a car, that doesn't require the dealer to plug in for every little issue. Mondeos are fortunatly quite simple in that department.

    ^^^

If it were me, and I was wanting to cut down my costs, I'd try to find a decent spec old model 2.0Tdci - Zetec or Ghia. I wouldn't go for the ST because of the 2.2 and I'd choke paying an extra €200 a year on top of a ridiculous amount already to the government.

Ok, so never though of the insurance aspect - noted.

Ya it's almost €800 to tax the 2.2, but again, there's a lot of money still in my bank account.

    Oh decisions.

Also my car as a four year warranty, something I take for granted. If the flywheel goes in the ST, that at least €800 gone out of the fund.

    I'm confused

If your flywheel goes in your 2008 Mondeo, something is fundamentally wrong with the car. If the flywheel goes in the 2005 Mondeo ST (depending on milage), something is wrong. Also isn't your warranty also limited by your milage (ie time or milage dependant ?)

The warranty is BS as such, unless it's a flawed car. If all goes to the manufacturers standards, no such issues should arise during the warranty period. After end of the warranty period it's possible, but that depends on the milage and how well the car was maintained.

Again, Fords are dead cheap on parts compared to my yoke. I pay 2k for clutch+flywheel replacement and have just done so. Still more than happy, because I have a car in the top spec.

If the flywheel goes on the 05 something is wrong with the flywheel not the car, they give trouble on the mondeo diesels. warranty is not BS as any car be it good or bad can have a faulty part that may well turn out to be expensive to replace. And doing a flywheel on a mondeo is just as expensive as the rest.

OP if it was me id change the car, feck the tax issue we are all used to payin high road tax so its nothin new to us! the st is much better speced, much better drive and will hold value reasonably well as it gets older. Look for one that has a service history, most 05's should and as said it shouldnt be too hard to find one with the flywheel already done as they do give trouble.

whats the story with your 08? petrol? diesel? mileage?

It's a 2008, Black Zetec 1.6 110PS, has Titanium X alloys, grille, spoiler. 59,000km with an immacualte service history.

A fair point you made too: I'm probably more likely to lose more money on my current Mondeo if I hang on to it, than I will lose on an ST.

I'd wait until someone commits to buying yours before doing anything, as I've got a feeling it might take a while to offload a 1.6 Petrol, 08 Mondeo - unless you are giving it away.

The four year warranty you mentioned, was that sold to you when you bought the car? Is it from ford or a warranty company and can it be transfered to the new owner? I imagine its a warranty company as they only came with 2 yrs warranty. Your price as a private sale will be up there with dealers offering fully serviced with warranty ect i sold the same car in red with 27000km for 13950 recently. If the 4 year warranty will cover the new owner you should be well in there at that price. Your already paying about 600 on road tax on that yeah?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭1867IE

The warranty is from Ford, will transfer no matter how many owners between now and April 2012.

    Current tax €447

It's not crazy money, I've had a few queries.

@ ROR yeah i wont be making a decision until I have cash in had but I'm still very unsure what to do!!

I would double check the warrenty, Irish Fords get a 2 year warrenty, UK ones get 3 years. From new you saying that Ford is giving it 6 years? If this is right, I have an 08 Mondeo bought froma ford dealer only serviced by the same dealer, I want that warrenty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭kildare.17hmr

Their not a bad seller, even the poverty models are moving ok so the zetec should shift for you quick enough with some good pics and well presented add. Good luck with the sale and stick up a link if ya have one

    Nope, slow it down there!!!

Two year from Ford ya? Then when I bought the car, I bought (Obtained :D) an extra two years. So Four in total.

And they transfer no matter how many owners.

your right they do come with 2 yr warranty but this would be an extended warranty for a used car, it would have been included in the price he paid

    Go for it mate.

I had an ST for few years a 2006 one and i can honestly say hand on heart it was the best car i have ever driven. They are stunningly quick with great MPG and a great looking car if you ask me.
Get rid of your current model and get one ASAP

You'd be better off going for a 130bhp model and getting a remap to be honest. You wont resell the ST TDCi in Ireland for what it cost you+VRT.

Give us a bit more info on mileage, what you're looking for from the new car and why? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭1867IE

Just want to free up some cash but at the same time have something nice!

I'm shopping around, could probably have one back here for €9,000 registered.

The VRT on them is mad, put 40585583 into the statistical code here.

    Yup, got €1900 for a 05 and 2100 for a 2006.

    Not too bad imo
