The actor Mick Lally, known to millions for his role as Miley Byrne in 'Glenroe', has died.

The 64-year-old passed away peacefully this morning after a short stay in hospital.

A native of Tourmakeady, Co Mayo, he was a graduate of University College Galway and taught briefly before becoming a full-time actor and founder of the Galway theatre company Druid.

I read this in a meeting today - I'm very sad about it. The man was a gentleman, an ambassador for the Irish language and for acting and a giant on stage and screen.

Also, I can sing this word for word still

    May he rest in peace.

RIP. I remember he came to our primary school, not sure why, think it was an Irish language promotion thing. Really nice guy anyway.

Glenroe meant one thing, the end of the weekend and the horrible thought of another week of school.
