Disco TD5 injector changeout

    Hi All
I've a fuel injector that needs replacing on my 00 TD5 Disco (125k miles). I've replaced injector harness hoping that would be the cure but injector on cylinder 4 looks to be the problem. I can source an aftermarket injector from the UK, Rimmer Bros for €300 or Original part for €400 but does anyone know of a good LR mech/garage in or close to Meath who could replace this and do the injectors need to be coded or are they a straight swap? I want to avoid being scalped by LR main dealer at all costs..

Yes, the ECU will need the code off the new injector.

Have you had the fault codes read?

Yes, fault code pointing to cylinder #4 injector

Right, fair enough, just checking you wern't going in blind ;). Did it show up as a cylinder imbalance or a specific injector fault? Has the test been re-run after checking the injector rocker clearance? Is there oil showing up at the red ECU plug (is this why you changed the loom?)

If it definitely is an injector, €300 is about right (good job they rarely go wrong!), they will all be genuine made by Delphi, you pay more to have it a LR box! There are 2 types, pre and post 2001, check your chassis number when ordering, you need an injector sealing washer as well.

Can't help with mechanic near you, I'm sure someone else will. Wise move not going near a dealer

    Thanks for that landkeeper.
I've also got a number for a diesel specialist (Diesel Engineering Services) in Cavan who will do for third of the cost of a dealer.

Specific injector fault was what I was told. The reason I went after the harness was it's a known issue and when the diesel block was leaking a couple of years ago, (another known issue!), that caused the problem with the harness back then. The way the engine is running now is the same as when the harness was replaced the last time. At €48 I thought no harm trying and at least it's got a fresh one in..

Fair enough, looks like you are going to get it sorted soon.

Just to wonder off topic slightly.
The injector harness is fairly cheap so I was considering changing it on my TD5. There's 130k kms on it now.
Is it advisable to just change it as a service item or wait till it goes wrong ?

Remove the acoustic cover and pull the plug off the loom (front RH corner of head), if there's oil there, change it. The post 01 loom isn't supposed to have the problem but I've seen seepage in an 05 Defender. The worst I ever saw was my own one, had to take the top of the ecu to tip the oil out

If you do change the loom, be careful how you fit the rocker cover gasket, they are prone to leaking at the back around the semi circular cut out.

    Thanks for the advice 101sean.
Pulled off the plug yesterday and there was a trace of oil starting, nipped into local LR dealer and got loom and cam cover gasket, put it in , an hours work max, well worth it for peace of mind.
