    Hi,
    I love the portrait style this guy does, you see the blemishes and other
    imprections - makes them much more human.

    I think I'm gonna mess about with my camera to get these type shots,
    any special gear I would need - apart from Flash (i have 480 EXII) - portrait lens - 50mm 1.4, I'm sure with these I could get decent shots,
    my cam is 5dII

    From the catchlights and the general look of the lighting it looks like he's using two strip lights or softboxes at equal or near-equal power and distance from the subject, one to the left and one to the right of the camera. You'd need a second flash and some light modifiers, stands, etc., and a compelling subject.
