Of the current irish outdoor records records which one(s) do you think will last the longest?

Personally I think the two 3000m records will stand for a long time. Excluding the Chinese, Sonia's 8:21.64 has only been beaten once, by Szabo, and Mark Carroll's 7:30.36 is astonishing (equivalent to a sub 13 minute 5k) and only one non-African runner has ever gone better than this time. I think these could be the last ones to fall.

Sonia's 2k WR of 5.25.36 equates to a better time that her 3k even with drop off as its 8.11 pace meaning she was about 8.16ish shape and is a time that has yet to be beaten by anyone (including attempts by Defar and Dibaba on it). Also the fact the distance is rarely run i believe this will remain a WR for quite some time never mind an irish record

I think you are wrong there to be honest.

    http://www.iaaf.org/mm/Document/Competitions/TechnicalArea/ScoringOutdoor2008_742.pdf

    The IAAF Scoring tables gives Sonia's 2000m time 1220 points, which equates to a 14.33 for 5000m and a 8:26 for 3000m, and a 3:58 for 1500m.

Sonia's strongest time is definetely 3000m with 1238 points.

However as the distance is rarely run it could well be a record that stands for a long long time.

Personally I think that the men's long jump of 8.07m could last for another 20 + years having taken nearly 90 years to beat peter O Connors record, which has been bettered only 3 times since 1990.

The men's triple and the womens shot and the men's Javelin would be next on my list.

Triple jump is the longest standing national record at the moment with 15.89m set back in 1977, young Eoin kelly was over 15m last year but has failed to improve on that this year, however he is a young athlete and triple jumpers don't usally reach their peak until the late 20's or early 30's.

Terry Mc Hughs record will be very hard to beat, with only 1 thrower over 70m in the last 10 years the possability of someone getting over 82m looks a long way off.

Would love to see someone have a go at Ray Flys records but don't think anyone has come within 3 seconds of it in a long time. Most under rated runner of his time in my books.

Yeah, I think either Galligan or Mageean will have her 800m record within the next two or three years. The rest of her records are a different story.

Mageean has the potential to break Sonia's 1500m, and I'm sure she will break her 800m record. The rest of Sonia's records look very safe for the next while though.

John Treacy's Marathon record also looks safe enough for a while. As does Mark Carroll's 5,000m record.

I reckon Derval will take down her current record in the next 2 years but after she retires it will last for donkeys years.

I think a lot of those field events like the Mens Triple Jump that have a pretty poor standard of national record might not last as long as we think. Who knows there could be a potential top class triple jumper currently in their early teens and if so then a record of 15m will be easily beatable. That really isnt a good national record at all lets be honest.

Events like the Mens Long Jump and High Jump on the otherhand will take a lot of beating as they are both world class marks.

There's an understatement! :D It's woeful, no offense to the guy who set it.

A contender for worst Irish Record maybe? According to the IAAF Scoring tables it gives 1035 points. That would equate to a time of 47.36 for 400m. That shows how weak it is!

Some very very weak ones on the womens side in the field events aswell.
