I once saw a poor fella getting a hiding outside Reds in Dublin a couple of years ago. It was clearly motivated by homophobia. I would have stepped in, but there was five scangers kicking the **** out of him, and besides, the bouncers got to him soon enough. Felt really melancholic after witnessing that. That kind of bigotry and brutality really amazes me. There certainly is evil in this world, sickening stuff.

How about my own Mother telling a joke about a gay guy who gets AIDS.. fully expecting me to find it funny. :/ (Obviously.. I was FAR from amused. It was one of like 3-4 times I've ever yelled at my Mum, and it was the only one of those where my Dad didn't tell me "Don't you ever talk to your Mother like that!"

I've never witnessed real violence like the guy above mentioned.. but I certainly hope if I did that I'd put my Taekwon-Do lessons to good use & break a couple of their legs.

The worst that has ever happened to me was having "f*cking tranny" yelled at me and two of my friends over and over again while we were walking up Abbey Street. Which, given that they were walking away from us while they were yelling at us, wasn't too bad.

The worst physical attack I've heard of was a trans girl who got a slap across the head. The worst psychological attack was some girls shouting abuse and profanities at three of my trans friends from a taxi. What made it particularly bad was that the taxi driver slowed down to walking speed so that his passengers could continue giving their abuse. This happened on the way to Pantibar on Capel Street - one of the guys outside the bar saw what was happening and took the taxi plate number. The cops said that it was a problem for the carriage office to deal with, and the carriage office said it was something for the cops to deal with.

Thankfully, I've never been the victim of any sort of violent incidents, or witnessed any. Worst thing of this sort that happened to me was a group of 14 year old skangers trying to block the doors at the Tallaght social welfare office, shouting "no fcuking dykes in here". The security guards got rid of them pretty quickly though!

Scratch that - the worst I've heard of was a transvestite who had her throat cut.

I have yet to see any actual homopobic attacks yet, I consider myself lucky in all fairness. Although growing up in an all boys school the usual taunts and shoves in the corridor have been my only form of 'attack' from homophobes.

Luckily I've never gotten much shít off people, I've been called a ****** in a non-joking way many times but the word is used so much to describe anyone who isn't "one of the lads" at school it's practically meaningless.

Worst thing is when I overheard a few lads while sitting next to them in class once. One fella was talking about a guy doing work experience in a barbers. The guy I was next to said something along the lines of "he's such a ****ing queer like, I'd never let any ****** cut my hair I ****ing hate them!" and the rest laughed and approved.

I kept my head down to not draw attention to myself, I kind of simmered inside when I realised how much I hated people like that guy and their their stupid bigoted **** that makes no sense. It's people like him that keep me from telling more casual friends at school, once word spreads I know I'd get homophobic crap off him and his moronic friends.

There was other things as well, one guy who was openly gay in my year had to leave the school because he was being bullied over it. I had people grilling me once as well asking me if I was gay, it wasn't really homophobic, just too bloody fúcking nosy.

Luckily I'v never been a victim of anything serious. The only thing that has ever happened to me was a Romanian gypsy woman spat at me and the girl I was meeting at the time. We were walking down a street in Cork city a few years ago holding hands and she took exception to the fact that we were obviously together. It was 2.30am, after we had been at a nightclub, so not exactly the middle of the day. Luckily the spit missed, but it disgusted me that she could show such hatred.

Ahh well, to be fair, a Romanian gypsy will probably experience more hatred in her lifetime than I ever will.

The worst thing iv ever experienced was about 3 weeks ago while i was in my home town, its not well known there that im gay but sure enough some people know due to a loud mouthed sister of mine lol, anyways about 3 guys started yelling abuse at me like ya F**King Fa**ot etc, i ignored them at first but they then went on to shout things like i should be banned from the local teams cuz ill get to happy in the showers and my father must have abused me etc, to which i turned around and told them to shut up and they know nothing of my upbringing etc. Disgusting horrible demented thoughts and they just yelled um at me.
Soon after i told them to shut it and threw some insults back one guy who i used to go to school with threw a punch at me. i managed to dodge and punch him back, the fight escalated to 10 guys on me and my friend WHO IS A GIRL all yelling abuse at me, while i tried to fight back and protect my friend who got a punch to the face by a fully grown man.
eventually the bouncers came and i was able to get escorted out.
meh feck it ill be in Dublin soon.

Thankfully I've never been physically threatened or seen anyone be but I've had a couple of people give me some crap before. The worst of it has probably come from my dad though.

There was something about the Civil Partnership Bill on the radio over a year ago and my mam commented on it and my dad responded with "perverts shouldn't be allowed to get married".
I gave out hell to him and he changed it to "******s shouldn't be allowed to get married"
I gave out to him again so he ended with "queers shouldn't be allowed to get married"
I'd have fought with him more but I was already crying and couldn't talk much so I had to leave it.

And the icing on the cake was that my mam was in the room and didn't come to my defense. She wonders why I won't come out to my dad

the worst is yet to come. its more like a campaign against me. it started when i was 9 years old being called a freak and weirdo by a hate filled girl. it hit me bad and i retreated and became quiet. then with the aid of drink and drugs i got out more. sure i learnt from the best. witnessed the lads groping girls, admiting wankering over each others girlfriends and just the general acceptance of perving on anything that moves. i could get away with it the younger better looking i was but the uglier ye get the more looks of disgust ye get from women. worst part about it was i was such a good boy when i had a girlfriend. anyways now that im gay its a matter of trying to erase the past and leaving these yuppies behind

I've been very privileged/lucky never to have encountered an attack. The most I've seen homophobia-wise is a great-aunt of mine (to whom I'm not out) going on about how gay people were "too weak to hold their wrists up" at my parents' 25th anniversary part, and a cousin of mine (ditto) talking about how disgusting it was to see all the guys kissing at the Trinity Ball.

Well for me it was a family reunion!
It was from my father. His nephew was there he's about 29/30. I knew he was gay with a year or two. He found out because he had his partner there with him. He said to my father Hi! This is my partner Eric and my dad was like so your telling me your one of these fa**ots and he as like I am gay! Then my dad said something from the bible and he told them they were going to burn in hell and then he spitted on them! He also told them to stay away from all the chlldren in the room beause they'll abuse them.
He then went on to blame how the guy's were ****ed up and it was there up bringing that caused and he told them they should see a doctor. He doesn't know that i'm gay yet.
He also went to Dublin to protest during the gay pride parade a few weeks ago!

    Jesus, how extreme.

I'm not trying to insult you, but thankfully people like your father are becoming more and more of a minority. He sounds like a very angry hate-filled person.
I'm sorry he's like that and that you'll have to deal with him when he finds out you're gay.

On topic, I found out that a "friend" has been calling me a c*ok sucking ****** who loves d*ik and he's been saying it to other people. Not exactly the worst but still, lovely charming fellow he is.

Jesus man. You must be pretty nervous about him finding out that your gay. I've met some pretty intolerant people but your old man seem really out there.

Donal Og gets alot of abuse from opposition supporters and players. And probably from Cork supporters as well. I was at a match earlier this year, Cork V Tipp. The Tipp team stopped playing in the 2nd half (tactics I believe, they are in the final now and I hope they win!). I was in the City End Terrace in Cork which is usually where the opposition support goes.

Donal Og had a great game and at one stage made a great save. There was a middle aged man behind me, Tipp supporter, shouted out "Donal ya fu**ing fa**ot". I turned to him and just glared at him, didnt say anything. I felt really angry. I decided that if he did it again I would confront him. My family were with me, they heard it too, they all looked at eachother and then at me in the hope that I didnt hear it. They would have backed me up if I said something to him. He didnt say anything for the rest of the game.

    Donal Og is a legend!

That he is! The impact of his bravery will only be realized in the future! He’s a man amongst men!

I believe that Cork should bestow some worthy honor on him. If not our president.
