... probably yours laptop graphics card is fried (had similar 'experience' with my laptop) .
as far as i know your laptop has 'add-on' graphics card, mean can be taken out and replaced for around 65-80euros... just open the laptop and check part number of graphics card and have a look on ebay

Just to clarify fried graphics card prevents lap top booting up

yep, when the graphics card (or any vital componnent eg.ram, cpu) is broken the mainboard wont pass POST (PowerOnSelfTest) so no chance for system boot

Checked graphics card unlocked & locked again & computer booted up.

Tried a few times was getting lines on screen sometimes OK sometimes not, connected to ext monitor sometimes was losing signal so has to be card or connection to motherboard doesn't it?

well, may be connection only, sometimes dusting-off may help

So should I still change graphics card I didn't want to buy one & find it's something else. At moment screen comes on about 3 times out of 10 the colours do look a bit washy as well

Just an update it's actually when I unlocked & reseated the CPU (not graphics card) that it booted up. bit confused now is it graphics card or cpu?
