ILads, is it my imagination or did some of the factories agree to pay heifer price for heifers which have had one calf. I'm thinking there was something about it in the IFJ a while back.
If so, it strikes me as a way to maximize value from the plainer type weanling calf this fall.
Keep her to get one calf off her, dry off pretty quickly and fatten. Flog calf as a suck.

    What do ye think?

I think it was dawn meats in waterford, you had to sign up by end of may I think it was. I'm open to correction on it though.

Personally I wouldn't be in favour of it, factories promoting this are realizing that beef is going to be scarce, therefore expensive in the future. The more heifers farmers put in calf, the more beef cattle will be around 2-3 yrs down the road, the cheaper beef cattle will be.

There was a similar scheme in the early 90's. Why bust a gut rearing extra cattle for factories to continue paying us the same price for cattle as our fathers got a generation ago?

    It was dawn meats alright.

Not sure if it was specific plants or not.

The scheme looked like a good idea to me for someone who wanted to grow their herd size.

AI a bunch of heifers and keep the ones who were easier calved/better mothers, send the rest to the factory without being penalised.
