If one had the choice between a 2008 model of a BMW 320d or 320i, which would you choose

320d would be the 177bhp SE version saloon

320i would be the 170BHP SE version saloon

I've heard some bad things about the reliability of the 2.0 petrol. Aside from that, the petrol is quieter & more refined than the diesel, but that's about it.

you can chip the 320d to 217 for less than €300. I have just chipped my 520d and its a different car. you'll still pay €156 tax a year

This is a classic example of the 'It's right for me so it must be right for everyone else' school of thought.:)

Don't you have to declare the increase in BHP to the insurance company? That should cost a few quid more per year

Fair enough, where do you get 'em chipped. I know a guy with a 320d who'd be interested in the increased poke

im just not sold on this whole chipping / re mapping thing. It will obviously increase horsepower and then they say improves fuel consumption.

I just think its all dodge and am very suspicious of it, have the image in my head of me doing it and then it will just feck up the car !!

then bringing it to a garage and the garage mecahanic "tutting" at me for getting the car chipped

The Diesel is a much better drive than the Petrol, and you will have issues with the Petrol.

We had a lovely 08 320i SE Business Edition back early with 16,000km on. My father in law got it for a steal ;) and 2 weeks ago (3 days out of warranty) it started to stutter, and the engine management light came on.

In to the dealers last week for the nox regeneration. 129 + VAT for diagnosis but they've covered the rest under warranty. Should be OK for another while then a coil will go. They'll replace that and when the next one goes they'll do all 4 coils. Possibly the injectors will go as well.

We have had issues with all the ED petrol BMW's we have on fleet. Up to 13 injectors replaced on an 07 523 at this stage! One customer runs a fleet of 9, early 08 318i's - all of which have been in for the same issues as I described above, most of them more than once.

Unless it's really cheap (as my father in law's was), and you like the coffee from a BMW dealer, you'd need to be certifiable to go for an i over a D.

    www.autoremap.com
    www.sportchip.ie
    www.kcsystems.ie

    & www.chippedire.com , is where i'd recommend.

Interesting reading, I'm always amazed at how flawed so many BMW's seem to be in the engine department, yet nothing seems to dent the image. People must really want that badge.
