I'm trying to sell a 2001 Corrolla with 80,000 on the clock. There's no damage to the body apart from the usual little scratches that can be on 9 year old car.

The reason I'm a bit nervous is I'm leaving the country in 2 weeks and need it gone.

How can I sell it when there are cheaper ones up on line??? What makes my car better than the other 40 similar cars on the net?

How much can I to get (1) given the time frame (2) normally

Ill get some pics up later.

If you're selling it on a site - put up as many pics as possible - showing inside and out.

    Make sure car is spotless.

If you need a quick sale, consider lowering the price if there are similar models on view that are cheaper! You need to beat the competition.

    The answer is simple

You need to advertise it everywhere, (especially locally, IE shops etc)

    Take good Pictures of it!

And if it still does not sell then you must drop the price... simple as.

If you've ony 2 weeks to sell the car then you'd better make sure there are no others cheaper than yours. Even then, you're relying on there being someone out there who needs or wants a 01 Corolla ASAP.

Depending on NCT, tax, body shape (5 door a terrible seller) you could ask anywhere between 1250 and 2250

The way I'll consider a car just from an add is how well the information is put out (mileage, tax, nct, extras) and how clean the car looks from the pictures.

Clean your car. Dry it. Take proper pictures from angles where you can clearly see the full car and in good lightning. Preferably somewhere outdoors. Good pictures of the interior, steering wheel and instrument cluster, back seats, maybe even a picture of the boot.

Really important to take good pictures. If I don't like the pictures of the car (funny angles, can't see the whole car properly), I'll usually move on to the next add with better pictures. Also if the car looks dirty in the pictures, I'll often move onto the next add.

Oh and if you have a full service history, mention it first. This is a big selling point.

Post your ad up here when it's ready and let us constructively criticise it :D. Don't mention in your ad you are leaving the country in two weeks, don't mention anything about it being a quick sale or mention that it was never crashed, all point to something dodgy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

I also like to see the reg of the car in the add so if I'm interested, I can do a quick motorcheck/mywheels check to see if the reg matches up with the make and model of the car and if I'm really interested, I can pay to check the history of the car on these websites..

You'ld be surprised at the amount of cars you find for sale who's reg number doesn't match with the make and model when you check it on these websites. Especially at this bottom end of market, there are many such cars...

The only way you're going to sell it within two weeks is to find the cheapest car online, and undercut it.

And you'd probably want to undercut by a good enough amount if you want a quick sale - although don't make it sound too good to be true.

Thanks to all the replies so far. I priced it at €1950 to try move it although its making me sick to do it. Its as clean a car as you could wish for and I'm getting calls offering me €1400:(

    Here's the ad.
    Any criticism very welcome

    Thanks again

    Edit out this muck........

..............These cars are known for having a nippy but economical engine, good gearbox and good steering. You don't see many of these cars broken down at the side of the road.

You'll have to accept less than the asking price, all folk want to haggle. You should see her gone in a week for €1750 all going well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

It's a good add. Nice clean car.

If you want a quick sale you'll have to let it go for around €1600-1700. People will haggle no matter how low you advertise your car for. You just need to keep a lowest price in your head which you won't go below and accept offers.

Also I agree on editing out the useless info about nippy engine and all. Just mention its a clean car and runs perfect.

And post the add on donedeal.ie if you haven't already done so. You'll get many replies over there too...
And you can also post the add on adverts.ie

Thanks lads. Got an offer of 1600 just there and will probably take it just to get it out of my way. Now i need a €100 bangernomics yoke to move me around for the next two weeks :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

Good man. Maybe you could ask him for 1650 or 1700 and see if you can squeeze a bit more cash out of him to pay for your banger... Good luck with the sale anyway...

Jaysus, that sounds like a great way to lose a sale.;)
I know if I agreed a price and if I came back with the cash and the seller tried to renegotiate I'd tell him where to go and walk away alltogether.

A 9 year old Corrolla with 80,000 on the clock is a banger?

I thought he just got an offer for 1600. If he's agreed on that price with the buyer then yeah, he should stick with his word. If he only got an offer then he can let the buyer know where he stands with the offer...

And no, I was referring to the car the op is deciding to buy for 100quid as the banger...

Good photos. Be careful of offers over the phone, not worth anything and can kill potential sales down the line as you tell others it's sold. The way I deal with them is make your offer, offer is then accepted with €200 deposit or pay in full, otherwise still on the market, puts pressure on them to come up with the cash.

What you need to do is make a really good video to show off your car:

    ...that video is gas.

Mind you, looks like 00 reg Corolla's are cheaper this side of the Atlantic ! :D

    Whodathunkit ? :p

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Older main stream cars (7 or 8 or more years old) are cheaper here than anywhere else in Europe. Legacy of the celtic tiger. Probably the only positive one :D

Mainstream cars usually are but most luxury cars around 4 or 5 years old are much cheaper here. Lexus LS430 being a prime example.

Jesus why didn't you post earlier?? If i had a video like that i could have got €4000 for my car!!! That video really is good though.

I'm selling tomorrow to a guy who is speaking like I'm ripping him off at €1600 if he starts trying to bargain I may have to kick him straight in the nads.

What do you think of the fact that I actulally paid €2700 for it in January bearing in mind it was very clean?

EDIT: I feel like I'm raping myself for agreeing €1600

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭Gophur

€1600 for a, nearly, 10 year old car is OK. Take it and run. What extra are you likely to get?

(You paid well over the odds in January, by the way, and €1100 is not much to lose on any car in a year's driving.)
