Hi, I'm a postgrad student. I live in rented accommodation and paying tuition fees out of my own pocket. I'm just wondering what tax reliefs I can avail of and how to go about it?

If it's an approved course then you'll be able to claim tax relief on the course fees.

you can claim a rent credit and tuition fees.

it is a credit against PAYE paid- if no PAYE no tax to claim relief from

It is possible for a parent to claim the relief back on the fees however as long as they are paying them *wink* *wink*

I only wish they could. Rent tax credits are only available on the income of the person occupying the rented accommodation. Absolutely ridiculous situation, as I'm sure most parents pay the rent for their children and those that have a part time job to fund their own way are hardly likely to be above the minimum threshold to pay tax anyway

Lads I'm 25 years old, not a kid :D I work and am completely independent. Only issue is this year I haven't paid much PAYE due to the fact I was getting some tax free income from a scholarship. So perhaps I won't be able to claim too much relief.

Like I said, if your income is below the tax threshold, it isn't worth persuing. It doesn't matter who is actually providing the funds for your rent

Yeh, I get ya. Think I'll try the parents trick with the tuition fees. One sack of money on it's way to my Dad for his credit card details :)
