Just had someone trading in a 08 Suzuki SX4 diesel and its a 1.6. Who makes this engine. Is it a home grown design by Suzuki or is it bought in! I always thought they used Fiat diesels and they're 1.3 and 1.9 . Anybody know the answer.

I wonder why they do that given that the SX4 and the Fiat Sedici are the very same car. You'd think they'd just use the same motors ! Then again Suzuki used to use the PSA HDi engine in the Vitara , maybe its an old deal going back. They dont use it anymore though , they use a Renault 1.9 in the Vitara these days.

    From suzuki.ie:
    X4 Diesel - Model Info

Suzuki Ireland Introduces SX4 5-door Diesel

Suzuki's SX4 sport crossover range, which blends the character of a sporty compact with that of a lightweight SUV, is now being offered with a 5-door diesel option.

The new 5-door 1.6 DDiS engine - supplied by Peugeot - has 90 PS output and 215 Nm of torque to ensure lively, flexible performance characteristics matched by strong fuel economy. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and driving through the front wheels, the combined cycle figure is a frugal 5.8L/100kms and CO2 emissions are 139 g/km, yet the latest SX4 clocks up 0-100 kms in 12.2 seconds and has a potential top speed of 175kmh

Might not be PSA. I don't know for sure, but it used be a 1.9 diesel option in those, recently changed to include a 1.6 option isn't it? Fiat now have a 1.6 diesel, so maybe it is Fiat. Don't know for sure though.

Edit - sorry, typed this before above post. I'm wrong, it's PSA.

The Suzuki uses the 1.6 diesel as used Peugeot / Citroen / Ford / Mini.

Sedici is indeed the same car but uses Fiat power plants. I don't know if they've got around to fitting their new 1.6M-jet to it yet, but I can tell you from driving a Bravo with that engine, it is indeed a fine power plant and would definitely be a better offering than the PSA lump.

Earlier Suzuki Vitara 2.0TD uses Mazda power plant (nice handy timing belt to do too!!)

Later models 1.9DDIS uses Renault power plant - my brother had one and it was a truly dreadful pile of sh!te. :o

They might have used the 2.0Hdi too in between the above, but I've never come across one

They did indeed use the HDi from about 2000 - 2005. When the new model came out in 2006 it used the Renault F9Q diesel engine which is very strong unit. Strange to hear one of those giving trouble!

Any of my own experiences up to my brothers car with the F9Q were good too. I had two Scenics (DTi and DCi) and both were bullet proof. My brothers car would cut out for no reason (replaced Crank Sensor), idled erratically (cleaned the MAF) and then the DPF / Anti Pollution light came on and the car then limped. We fitted a second hand DPF, got it going right, and then he flogged it for half nothing just to be rid of it after 2 months of ownership. He then bought and A4 TDi instead. The Suzuki was a lovely looking car and quite nice to drive, but he had no confidence in it at all. :(
