Can someone please tell me what all I will have to do in my driving test - I think I'm a pretty decent driver and will be going to apply for a test soon enough but I'd like to practice a few of the more technical bits before going for the test

I know there's the hill starts, reversing around a corner, etc etc etc but does anyone have a full list of things that are examined in the test so I can prepare fully beforehand

    thanks

    Read this thoroughly ;)

    http://www.rsa.ie/Documents/ADI/DrivingFault_Marking_Guides.pdf

I'd suggest you pay particular attention to page 4 to start with. I'd also suggest you seek out an ADI in your area as he or she will be able to help you rectify any bad habits or faults in your driving.

Before going out you will sit down at a desk and answer some questions.

    http://www.drivingtesttips.ie/Irish-Driving-Test-Questions.php

The above link pretty much covers everything and are straight forward enough. Just make sure you can answer them without looking at the answer after going through them a few times and should be fine. I only got asked 4 questions. Some people get more.

What should you do when approaching an amber light?
What is the 2 second rule?
What should you do if blind by oncoming lights?
Who has right of way at a junction of equal importance?

    They were my 4 questions.

Then she took out a sheet with signs on it. I got asked 2 regulartory, 2 warning signs and an information sign. They were clearway, pedestrian zone, series of dangerous corners ahead, left lane closed in a 3 lane road and then the hospital ahead in 150 meters.

Then it was out to the car where i opened the bonnet and she asked me to point to where i'd put brake fluid, windscreen washer, coolant and what i would do to change oil. I didn't have to touch anything. Just point. Look at your car manual if unsure where they are. But the markings on the lids give an indication of what they are.

After that it was into the car where i put on the indicators front and back and showed that the breaks worked. She got in and asked me to point out my wipers, full beams, hazard light and rear window demister. Then she told me to pull off. Just around the corner she told me to pull in for the reverse around the corner. From the position i stopped in i done the turnabout. Then on the way back to the center after doing a lap of Finglas she got me to do the hill start. But the thing was barely a hill.

The key areas that will cut out a lot of marks in my opinion is observation and progression. Get into the habit of checking mirrors before signaling, look over the should and mirrors just before turning. For reversing just make sure you check 360 degrees around you and keep checking during the manouever. Also keep up with the traffic as long as you don't exceed the speed limit. If it's a 50 zone then do 50 if it's safe to do so. Also don't stop for hazards when you have right of way. Such as someone reversing out of a garden. Slow down and let them see you. And when moving out at junctions go when there is a safe gap. Don't be over cautious as you will get marked.

    Anyways good luck.

Possibly not what you want to hear, but a few lessons can be invaluable at this stage. Get some recommendations for instructors who operate near your testing centre. They can take you through the process, help get you familiar with the test routes, and get you used to having a (relative) stranger in the car giving instructions.
