Possible Bogus NCT?

Hi I'm currently looking at buying a car and have my eye on one. The problem I have is the seller has said the car has just passed the NCT and I saw the disc. However, when I ran a quick car check through on the internet, it says that the NCT was due in May 2010. Perhaps it's just a case of the database not being updated yet but I'm a bit wary of this. I've rang the NCT crowd but they claim they can't tell me anything as I'm not the owner of the car, which is understandable but I just want to know when the NCT is up. Is there anyway of finding out this information?

Because of waiting lists, it's absolutely possible it has just been NCTed, despite being due it since May. My car was NCTed last week, but should have had it done in April.

The NCT will expire from when the test should have been done, so in your case it will expire in May 2012.

Walk. It's up to the seller to prove it's genuine.

Umm, I thought we'd already established that NCT/Tax dates on mywheels/etc are horribly inaccurate?

The seller hasn't been asked to prove it's genuine, the car has the disc and I'm sure he'd show the cert too if asked.

    Wtf

I would retract my +1 to the "Walk" advice earlier if the seller could produce a cert. Lots of times there is no cert available, just the disc in the window.

I've just seen the disc and haven't asked to see the cert so I suppose the best thing I can do is ask to see the cert and that way I'll know it's genuine. I think that there's just a back log in updating the database and this is what's causing the issue. The car shows up with 'caution' on the car check due to the NCT being displayed as being up, when by rights if it's been done recently it should be displayed as 'go' which seems unfair to the seller in my opinion.

Do not run a mile! If the car has just been NCT'ed and therefore isn't on cartell etc yet then it's probably in perfect mechanical order. Ask to see the white Results sheet. It will have the amount of inspections etc carried out on the car.

If that is missing then you can worry, but even then you can go book in the car on ncts.ie using only its Reg and first Reg date (the vendor will gladly give you that info if he's legit). If the car is not eligible for another NCT then it obviously has been passed...

Or you can contact NCTS helpline and ask when it was last NCT'D??

done this myself a while back when looking at 2nd hand car. previous owner did not have cert.
rang nct and said i purchased the car ( which i had not done yet)
gave them reg and asked when it was due for nct. said car was not due till 2012. they will give out the info if they think you own the car.

i taxed my car in April and my wheels still shows it as out of tax!
OP, no need to walk or un a mile as posted, just check that the cert is provided and make sure its genuine.
