Had the use of a friends car in France, he got written notice of a speeding fine I incurred, with points. I can pay the fine, but can points be enforced on my Irish licence? Is there a way that I can pay the fine but not take the points?

    ta all.

    No,

There is no agreement in place between France and Ireland.

Sure we don't even have an agreement with NI! Is there any agreement between Ireland and any other country??

    Ignore it IMO.

Nothing they can do to enforce it. Same as points incurred in the UK - cant be added to an irish licence

Pay the fine you don't want French plod stopping your mate and arresting him for none payment of the fine next time he goes.

Points are not enforceable I'm very surprised they got the address though.

Happy to be corrected...but whilst I don't think the points can be put on your Irish licence, the French police will keep them on their records...which will matter if you're ever pulled for speeding whilst driving in France again ;)

ISTR my brother got a 12-month driving ban in France, after being caught speeding a few times on several different trips, racking up points on their system  And it was 100% enforced the next time he visited France, when the Gendarmes had a friendly word with him after he disembarked from the eurotunnel train. His wife drove for the rest of that trip :D

    Your half right,

They'll have it on record if:
    A. If the lazy french plod files the paperwork correctly.
    B. If your stopped at the roadside and able to record your driving license number
    C. If you were speeding in a rental, they can request the license details from the rental company.
    D. You were driving your french mates car, he'd have to furnish your details or get the points himself (Even then you could write down any old b*ll**** on the form, as they can't check the details)

If your caught on camera by a speeding camera in your own car, there is absolute jack they can do about it.

Even if they stop you again they have to prove you were driving the car and they can't do that without the ticket as they had no address to send it to.

OK - to clarify and close thread:
    1. I got caught on speed camera in friends, French licenced, car.
    2. Fine and points notice arrived to him by mail.
    3. He will talk to French police, they will tell him (I hope) the fine must be paid
    4. Road Safety Authority here have informed me by email that French points cannot be passed to Irish licence.
    5. My best outcome is to pay fine, and learn that points cannot be issue to me (not technically possible) nor can they be issued to him (he can prove he was not driving, by showing airplane tickets).
If there is another wrinkle I will post back.

    Cheers,

Theres a distinction there, i.e. if you have a Dutch License and you get a fine in Germany, you cannot get Points on your Dutch License, although you still have to pay the fine.

However the Germans put it on Record (in that office in Flensburg i believe) that there are points against your license. In reality this means that you have points against your license, but only in Germany and also the points are only ever against the car and not the license itself. As there could be more than one person with your name.

The French operate a similar system.

I.E. if they never get your driver license number you'll never have an accumulation of points in that country only against your license.

I have an Irish license and have 3 points in Germany for example, but none anywhere else.

It is possible to get banned in Germany as well from an accumulation of points, know of one lad who had to drive to Utrecht and then get the ICE the rest of the way to Cologne :)

He should have recieved the ticket with the picture on it, so he can show that it wasnt him driving.

As said previously, just pay it or your mate will be in stuck right in it !

    Hello PWR,

How did this work out for you and your friend? I have a similar situation now!
I was driving in France in his car. He has received notification of a speeding offence, 45 eu fine and expects points for his licence....

    Thanks...
