    Hi,
just having a bit of trouble picking my modules.
I may sound stupid but i have the option of studying mathematics or mathematics(honours).
Is the second one just honours maths at secondary level or is it applied mathematics?
    thanks for your help.

i did MA180 last year, and it's a bit more than what you learn at LC honours. it's not applied maths. the course code is MP1** for that and an alternate name sometimes used is Maths Physics.

first semester, you'll be learning about matrices (going up to 3x3) and a bit of number theory (prime numbers/Fibonacci sequence etc) in Algebra and some minor calculus in Analysis (the two sub modules in MA180)
second semester, you delve more into number theory (it gets a bit boring but that depends on your lecturer) and some major calculus in analysis.
it's a bit more complicated overall than LC but you can go with MA180 for semester one and see how you find it. i think you can drop down before February to pass if you find it difficult.

this is the syllabus on the NUIG site - http://www.maths.nuigalway.ie/cstudents/syllabus/ma180.shtml
and if you do find yourself having trouble with it - SUMS (Support for Undergraduate Maths Students) is a drop-in thing where you can get help from the tutors.
and go to your tutorials. you prob won't listen but if you do go, it makes the course a lot easier

+1, that goes for anybody in any course really. Around early december and again in late april you'll hear people giving out about their lecturer saying he/she never explained things. Ask them did they ask their tutor, and alot would say they didnt go to the tutorials..

i didn't go to the tutorials for a while, but i started going closer to the exam. sometimes the tutor would go a bit slow for me, but it's really good for anyone who struggles with a subject. i wouldn't have struggled much but it did help me understand maths better.
unless you're an absolute whiz at a subject and completely understand everything the lecturer says, go to your tutorials. it also makes the assignments easier cos the app maths tutor kinda helped us with them and gave us extra notes for the exam :D:D
