Is there any way of getting around the booking procedure/charges for overnight guests? I'm going to be living there this year and it is quite possible that I will have someone staying over very frequently and I know well that those charges will add up to a lot. Cheers.

There's a gate that can be hopped.

get in before the gates are closed. Easy. Its not till 11 or 12. Also security aren't checking every night, only busy ones.
I mostly only had guests Friday,or during the weekend, no one ever checked my card then. I stopped paying after a while.

Always have a backup place to go for your friend though in case theres a problem.

Good stuff. Also is being on the ground floor an advantage at all in this respect?

not really, even if your on the right side of the building I don't think there's anyway you could get a person through the tiny part of the window that opens and opening a fire door would set off an alarm.
At best you could try handing them a student card but if security are actually checking the pictures you wouldn't get away with it.

The level you stay on doesn/t matter at all in terms of getting people in.

If you're not going out on town, if you have your guest in before 11.30 (or whatever the latest is, I can't remember) they can can stay, security won't (can't?) search your room.

If it's a very regular thing that you need to have someone over once/twice a night, every week, make friends with security and I'm sure you can come to some arrangement. The lads on the the door at night (especially one in partiular we all know) are bang on and help make staying on campus as easy as possible as long as you're not a dick.

There is a gate that can be hopped, but, on more than one occasion I enjoyed watching the security guys chasing people around campus, once you're on campus before 11.30 there shouldn't be a problem because the security guards don't check apartments unless it's noisy and a complaint has been made.
Another way to get people in (as documented by an unsuccessful SU candidate from several years ago) is to pay for a parking spot in the underground car park and bring them in that way, but I hae no idea how successful that method is myself..
1 thing I would warn you though is to clear it with your housemates, I'm not allowed to live on campus any more because I enjoyed first year a little too much. I never got caught with people in the house but at the end of the year one of my housemates sent an email to campus res which ultimately led to me being denied on-campus accommodation for the rest of my stay at DCU.
Personally I enjoy living off campus more, but if you plan on staying on campus do check if it's ok with your housemates and try not to make too much noise...
