keep to the back streets, avoid anywhere you can see something or are near something mildly touristy and you can eat very well for fairly reasonable prices in rome.

The Trastevere area has a good few restaurants - one called Alle Fratte di Trastevere was fantastic ( 5 years ago) - although I dont remember the exact prices - 25 of us ate like kings and drank our fill for €30 per head there and were treated very well by our hosts.

There are quite a few reasonably priced restaurants around Termini, especially in the smaller streets north (?) of the station, off Via Marsala.

A good tip for eating anywhere in Rome is to fill up at lunch - food's just as good but you'll pay less than half.

Try Pasta Love off Via Internationale (spelling?) somewhere - I had the joy of been turned away from Est Est Est (its very near here) due to it being so busy (complete tourist place) and wandering the back streets found this place. Unbeleivable food for next to nothing. Sorry cant be more specific with directions.

When you visit the Pantheon, you'll see the Hotel Pantheon on the square. Standing in front of the hotel, there's a side street to the left. Up here there are a couple of 'local' restaurants (sorry can't be more specific). Great food at very reasonable prices. Many of the restaurants around the main piazza's are designed for tourists with most charging a fee to sit outside. While this can be nice for a special occasion, you'll get great quality at cheap prices off the beaten track

Near the Pantheon, down a side street or two there is a restaurant with a kitchen that is in full view from the street. Our Italian tour guide recommended we go. It was delicious. We had things like courgette flower, real traditional Roman food. Hardly any tourists in there from what I could see. Can't remember the name unfort!

I have eaten in Meid in Napoli restaurant, Termini. It's a modern, reasonable and pleasant place, mainly pizzas and grills. Popular with tourists and Italians. Location is corner of Via Varese and Via del Castro Pretorio.

You'll find lots of water taps around Rome, so no need to buy bottled water. Do ask the price of ice-cream or coffee before purchasing. My friend travelled a few months later than me, and is not still over the shock of having to pay 8 euro for a cup of coffee near the Spanish Steps.

Try L'Archetto, it's about 60 seconds walk from the Trevi fountain.
Best pizza I've ever tasted, you can snap the pizza base like a cream cracker it's so crispy.
Going back to Rome ourselves on Tuesday and as soon as we check in we're going there for pizza!

Nuove Stella is one of my favourites. I eat there every time I visit Rome.

For ice cream Fassi is nearby - the tram stop is 30m away. You queue at the cash desk, order your icecream and take your ticket to the counter for service. It is a huge shop and can get very busy.

Cul de Sac, it's near the Piazza Navona and Largo Argentina.

    Did you read the OP?

    An overpriced tourist trap.

Of course I read the OP, why else would I have replied?!?!? :D

To summarize, the OP is looking for somewhere to eat on a tight budget in Rome, they are staying neat Termini.

I am going out on a limb to assume that they will not eat near their hotel at both lunchtime and dinnertime every day during their 4 night stay? It isn’t specified in the OP whether they are looking for lunch for dinner places, in any case I am going to assume they will not return to the area of their hotel for lunch as this would be a waste of time. The place I recommend is centrally located and within a 20 minute brisk walk from their hotel. They also have the option of getting a metro from Vittorio Emanuele metro station or a taxi from Largo Argentina.

I ate at Cul de Sac on two occasions, once for lunch and once for dinner. I felt the menu was reasonably priced and the food was value for money. On both occasions I got the local meat and cheese cold platter, on the occasion I stayed for dinner I also got a main course (I can't remember what but I know the OH got some kind of meatballs which he was very happy with) but not a dessert as I was stuffed!!! The wine list is vast and both wines I tried were very high quality, they are mainly sourced from the local region. We sat on the terrace outside which was pleasant, I ventured inside to use the loo and the place appeared to be on the compact side, I had to side step waiters to get to the end of the restaurant! I’m sure when you are sitting at your table the feeling is different. The service is typically Italian and similar to the service we experienced in other Italian restaurants, not too high speed but unlike Dublin we did not feel like we where being forced to leave when finished eating in order to make way for other diners who may arrive.

I don’t understand what you mean by “tourist trap”, maybe you could write and tell us of your experience at the restaurant so we can evaluate.... Where there other tourists in the restaurant when I visited? Yes, there where many people there from different countries judging by the languages I heard, but I must add that on both occasions I was there I also seen (and heard) Italians in the restaurant.... Is it the kind of place that a tourist will get ripped off in? No. The OP is going to Rome after all, which is in essence one big "tourist trap"!!!

I think a lot of restaurants will fit into the OPs tight budget; there are always less expensive things on every menu that may interest you. If your budget is extremely extremely tight then maybe a restaurant is not for you, if this is the case look out for take away pizza places, most of which are extremely good. I stayed in Hotel Domus Praetoria near Termini on Via Milazzo and there was a very good pizza place on that street, we had breakfast there! (OP, if you intend only eating near your hotel there are a lot of restaurants on this street)

Everyone’s opinion of a place is different, this is just my opinion, but I think this place is at least worth a visit for a glass of wine and then you can make up your own mind. Enjoy your trip to Rome!

Have a great time! Just a quick tip, anything you have decided you will definitely do, for example, the collesseum, try to prebook, it'll save you so much time queueing!
