Ran out of petrol and now won't start !!

I have an E36 BMW which won't start for me !!!

It was parked sideways on a slope for the last few days and I went to start it this morning. It turned over and then cut out almost immediately.

It was the wife driving it last and she said it was very very very low on fuel when she parked it up.

What I think may have happened is that as it was parked on a slope the little petrol may have been over to one side of the tank and hence it ran out of petrol.

I put about 5 litres of petrol in and still can't get it to turn over.

Has anyone any ideas of what could the problem or am I barking up the wrong tree .... as much as know how my wife likes to play Russian Roulette with the petrol stations I don't think she would have left that little amount of petrol in the tank. The on board computer is telling me there was 20 miles left in the tank at start up. (its a 2.5l 6cyl)

Here's my guess. First off can you hear the petrol pump humming
when you turn the key to start.

If so good. Now if your any good at mechanics you might need to take out the pump and inspect.
Chances are some dirt has bein sucked up from the bottom of the tank. Might only be a matter of cleaning out the sieve,
put back in the tank and try again.
